Why Did Lucifer Marry Candy

The charming and devilish Lucifer Morningstar returns from hiatus with “Candy Morningstar” and we have nothing but questions about Mrs. Morningstar.

It has been hell without Lucifer heating up our televisions on Monday nights, and now that he’s back we find that things have changed for our handsome devil. What does it all mean? Let’s break it down.

Mrs. Morningstar

Lucifer showed up in Los Angeles after being away for over two weeks. No one heard from him in his absence. No one, not his family, not his friends, and not his confused partner and would-be lover, Chloe. When last we saw Lucifer and Chloe, he’d saved her from death by facing his fears and trekking into hell for the cure. He had to die to save her, but upon hearing that his father may have placed her in his path, Lucifer now wants to protect her.

His method of protecting her: showing up with a new wife he met and married in Las Vegas. Candy Morningstar. She’s blonde and bubbly, and she was an exotic dancer before Lucifer whisked her away from Vegas.

Their marriage was a sham, by the way. We learn at the end of the episode that Lucifer hired this woman to pretend to be his wife, presumably to push Chloe away from him.

Don’t go breaking my heart

Lucifer came to a realization over the course of the winter three-part story arc. Not only do none of his former lovers have feelings for him, but Chloe’s growing attraction might all be the work of his father. With so much uncertainty, Lucifer left town, leaving Chloe confused and hurt in his wake. Before he left, Lucifer told Amenadiel to watch over Chloe, which he did, but even he’s confused about why Lucifer would show up with a wife.

As it turns out, Lucifer hired Candy to keep Chloe away from him. He doesn’t want to hurt her, but allowing their blossoming relationship to continue would be just as cruel as letting it continue if she wasn’t acting of her own volition.

This is Lucifer’s way of protecting Chloe, by pushing her away.

He loves her

Lucifer does care about Chloe. He’s doing all of this to protect her, which is a big indicator of his feelings even though he might not be ready to admit it himself.

Will Lucifer be able to figure out why his father put Chloe in his path? That’s the big question, and it’s a question we hope to learn more about in the second half of the season.
