LUCAS – The Malabar Farm Restaurant, owned by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, is reopening Tuesday, June 8, after being shut down during the pandemic.
The menu including fresh steaks and seafood, homemade garlic-whipped mashed potatoes, wild mushroom soup, homemade breads and desserts.

Chef de cuisine Daniel Bailey said the offerings will be constantly changing, serving with entrees as dry scallops and fresh halibut along with baby vegetables, healthy meals, vegetarian meals and alfredo dishes on the menu. Beer and wine will be sold.
“We’re going to have fun,” Bailey said, adding he will be coming to the dining rooms to greet guests.
The restaurant holds a rich history all its own. Completed in 1820 by frontier family David Schrack and his sons, the two-story home was made from bricks formed on site. The foundation of the home was made from hand-hewn sandstone blocks quarried just 300 feet from the building.
In 1941, the Schrack Place became part of Malabar Farm, home to Pulitzer Prize winning author, farmer and conservationist Lou Bromfield.

Bailey ran the restaurant at 3645 Pleasant Valley Road from 2006 to 2012. Torence Anderson is head chef. The house manager is Jessica Hill, president of the Mansfield United Lions Club and formerly a public relations representative at the 179th Airlift Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard.
Patio dining coming to Malabar Farm Restaurant
Bailey said the atmosphere is casual and family-friendly. When the new deck is completed by July customers will be able to dine on the patio and even bring their pets on the patio.
Bailey, who hails from California, said customers are sure to feel at home in the restaurant and have a good meal. The restaurant is near Malabar Farm State Park.
“There’s a new parking lot and we’ll have flowers planted outside the restaurant soon,” he said. The natural spring has re-opened outside the restaurant. Inside there is a fresh coat of yellow paint in one of the dining rooms called The Mount Jeez Room and a new wood floor throughout both dining rooms.
Bailey said the late Bromfield had always hoped to open a restaurant featuring a French chef in the Schrack Place. He never got the chance but he did use the spring beside the restaurant as a market stand to sell his farm-fresh produce. Malabar Farm has been a state park since 1976.
Bailey said some of the restaurant’s menu features toward French cuisine.
The coronavirus has caused some delays, but the restaurant operation and staff are ready to go.

“The state (of Ohio) has been very helpful,” he said.
Bailey has worked in restaurants and catering for more than 30 years, catering to the rich and famous including John Wayne’s widow Pilar and serving as a sous chef in catering the opening of “The Doors” movie.
The Malabar Farm Restaurant is open year-round. Hours are Tuesdays through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
