Q. Why did Monkey Joe’s suddenly close down?
A. According to comments left on their Facebook page, it came as a bit of a surprise when area parents arrived at Monkey Joe’s to drop off their children and found the doors locked during posted business hours in late November. The popular spot at 4310 Shipyard Blvd. had quietly shuttered the operation, leaving kids with one less set of slides to play on.

Kelly Ronna, who handles corporate communications for the parent company of the children’s entertainment chain, said the closing was an isolated incident.
“Monkey Joe’s is a franchise-operated organization, and the closing of the Wilmington, N.C., location was decided upon by the local business owner,” she stated in an email.
Ronna didn’t rule out the possibility of opening another location in town, although no current plans exist.

“Monkey Joe’s is always looking for expansion opportunities, particularly in the Southeast, and welcomes the opportunity to speak to anyone in the Wilmington area that may be interested in owning his or her own Monkey Joe’s location,” she wrote. “In the meantime, the closest Monkey Joe’s locations in North Carolina are in Raleigh, Cary and Fayetteville.”

Q. What are they building behind the Walmart at Monkey Junction?
A. What drivers see out there, at 5111 Carolina Beach Road, is the framing and beginning construction for Monkey Market. The new business, according to the Facebook page, is a drive-thru convenience store with “the best slushies around.”
Owner Stephen Ohm, who will run the business with his wife, Brittni, said the couple have been looking to open a drive-thru convenience store for a while and they were drawn to Wilmington because they love the area.

And the store? Well, it’s going to sell everything a traditional convenience store would sell.
The right side will have 21 coolers and several freezers, too. The left side will have dry snacks and the slushie machine.
For the drive-thru aspect of the store, Stephen said customers should expect to drive around back and through the center of the store.
The Ohms hope to open the store early next year.
