Why Did Rafe Melt The Cross

Warning: This story contains spoilers from season 3 of Outer Banks.

A new beginning. Outer Banks season 3 explored the chaotic conclusion to a lengthy treasure hunt — and not everyone made it to the end.

During the third season finale, which premiered on Thursday, February 23, John B (Chase Stokes) and Sarah’s (Madelyn Cline) respective dads ended up dead on their way to El Dorado. John B was able to make amends with Big John (Charles Halford) before he got injured during a shooting. Meanwhile, Sarah honored her father’s (Charles Esten) sacrifice for her and moved on from their tumultuous past.

After John B and Sarah acquired the gold, the couple and their friends went public with their discovery. The Pogues received money and fame for their successful treasure hunt. As they celebrated their success, the group was approached by an unknown man with a brand-new set of clues to track down another mystery.

Cline had previously hinted that season 3 wasn’t the end for the group. “I don’t think it’s going to be the last. I think there’s more of the story to be told,” she told Today in February.

That same month, Netflix confirmed that Outer Banks was renewed for a fourth season days before season 3 was set to drop.

“Words can’t even begin to describe. Yesterday was so special,” the Glass Onion actress gushed via Instagram. “I’m beyond grateful to @netflix, to this cast and crew, and mostly to each and every one of y’all who have watched and loved obx and to everyone who showed up to poguelandia yesterday!!!! Thank you thank you thank you a million times thank you #obx4.”

Before season 3 debuted on Netflix, showrunner Josh Pate opened up about how the season 3 story lines were affected by real-life events.

“Shooting in Barbados in season 2 really opened up some ideas from people that we met and stories that we heard, and then it dovetailed into the mythology that we had for the adventure story this season,” he told Entertainment Weekly earlier this month. “It explores an earlier pocket of history than the Antebellum stuff that was tied to the mythology of the Royal Merchant Gold, and it ties back into different cultures from South America. It was inspired by us being in Barbados and learning about the culture there and the lower Caribbean and the West Indies. The new bad guy and the culture that we explore are in that part of the world and it’s a little older part of history that we’re synthesizing.”

John B Routledge Shortly after his reunion with Big John, the high school student was backed into a corner by the secrets he was forced to keep from his loved ones. John B and his father tracked down clues that led to El Dorado — which led to death, mayhem and plenty of obstacles. Meanwhile, in his personal life, John B’s inability to clue Sarah into details of the treasure hunt hurt their relationship. Sarah cheated on John B with her ex and he beat up Topper (Austin North) as a result. The fan-favorite couple, for their part, worked out their issues before they headed for South America. In the flash forward, Sarah and John B appeared to be in a good place. Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix
Sarah Cameron Throughout season 4, Sarah was caught between her past as a Kook and her current life as a Pogue. While she faced the aftermath of her father almost killing her, Sarah returned home to nothing. Her personal issues drove her and Topper together. As the season continued to play out, Sarah realized that she wanted John B to be her future before they rekindled their romance. Her life took another hit when their trip to find the treasure ended with her father getting killed in front of her. Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix
Kiara Carrera After she saved JJ’s (Rudy Pankow) life in the season 2 finale, Kiara (Madison Bailey) developed feelings for her best friend. Her attempts to address their connection led to several fights. Following an argument with her father about how the teen wasn’t good enough for his daughter, JJ stole money from Mike which created more issues between him and Kiara. The couple got into an argument while Kiara’s relationship with her family also regressed. After she admitted to JJ that she loved him, Kiara’s parents had her taken to a wilderness retreat. JJ rescued Kiara and they confessed their feelings for one another before they officially got together. Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix
JJ Maybank During season 3, JJ struggled with his new normal after he fell in love with Poguelandia. His life in the Outer Banks ended with plenty of dead ends — which caused JJ to push Kiara away. Although JJ was interested in a future with his best friend, he couldn’t deal with his lack of prospects. JJ made the mistake of stealing from Kiara’s father before he reached out to a shady Pogue named Barracuda Mike for help. Ahead of the finale, JJ faced his feelings for Kiara and they shared a kiss before they left to save their friends. In the flash-forward, JJ appeared to be in a better place financially and seemingly has continued to date Kiara. Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix
Pope Heyward Following his return to North Carolina, Pope (Jonathan Daviss) was still motivated to track down the cross that Rafe (Drew Starkey) stole from them. Pope, who also dealt with issues in school, thought of a heist to acquire the priceless artifact but it ended unsuccessfully. With help from Cleo (Carlacia Grant), Pope tried not to let his frustration control him. He later pieced together how his ancestors were connected to El Dorado before he traveled down with his friends. Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix
Cleo The newcomer attempted to adjust to her new life throughout season 3. After she joined Pope’s family, Cleo found herself growing closer to her friend. The pair teamed up multiple times — and Cleo later talked Pope out of shooting Rafe. Cleo traveled with the rest of the Pogues to South America. She defined her relationship with Pope and helped her friends track down the treasure before they found fame and fortune. Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix
Rafe Cameron Throughout the third season, Rafe attempted to step out from his father’s shadow by trying to take care of the cross. He quickly got captured by Singh (Andy McQueen) in a deal gone wrong — but Rafe and Kiara figured out a way to escape. Kiara double-crossed Rafe before they both returned to the Outer Banks. After he received pushback from Ward on his ideas for their fortune, Rafe teamed up with Barry (Nicholas Cirillo) to steal and melt down the cross. The twosome attempted to sell parts of the gold before Barry hinted to Rafe that Ward may sell him out. Out of fear, Rafe hired a hitman but he later chose to save his father’s life instead. Rafe brought Ward to their private plane before his dad gave him his blessing to control their family’s future. Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix
Topper Sarah’s ex-boyfriend entered the picture again to help her adjust to life in the Outer Banks again. He initially helped the Pogues during their train heist — but things quickly took a turn. Following a fight with John B, Sarah spent the day with Topper and the former couple hooked up at the beach. Sarah immediately regretted her night while Topper attempted to get back together. After John B beat Topper up in front of a crowd, the Kook planned to press charges until Sarah stopped him. Topper, who burned down John B’s house after seeing his reunion with Sarah, ultimately went to the cops before the season 3 finale. Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix
Ward Cameron The show’s big villain spent the first half of the season healing from the injuries that he acquired in the season 2 finale. Ward ran into some complications when Rafe refused to listen to him about what to do with the cross and their future in the Outer Banks. Ward returned to his hometown to force Rage to shut everything down — but his only son put out a hit on him instead. The duo mended the rift in their relationship before Ward left for South America with Sarah. Although Ward and Sarah didn’t see eye to eye, he attempted to make amends throughout the season. During the season 3 finale, Ward put himself in the line of fire to save his eldest daughter and her friends. Sarah held a funeral for her later father at the site of his murder. Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix
Big John During season 3, Big John stopped at nothing to find his son in the Caribbean. Their reunion was short-lived, however, since Big John and John B immediately started looking into the treasure at El Dorado. After he convinced his son not to clue in his friends, Big John stopped at nothing to crack the code. Things continued to get worse when Big John killed two of Singh’s men in cold blood before he was captured. The father-son duo reunited in South America and paired up with Sarah and Ward on the last leg of the adventure. Big John ultimately got injured by a bullet — which made it impossible for him to see the City of Gold. Instead, John B and Sarah scored the treasure and were able to say goodbye to Big John before his death. Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix
