Why Do Dogs Like To Lay On Your Feet

January 22, 2018

Sometimes, if you take a moment to stop and observe your dogs, you’ll notice that they all seem to have a similar and repetitive behavior. At some point, you may have wondered: “Why does my dog sit at my feet?”

They do it all the time right? It’s pretty funny to see, because they could have picked any spot in the world. Yet, they chose to either sit on your feet, or sit right down beside them.Turns out, there is a need that is being met when they do this behavior. This post reveals reasoning behind dogs and this particular behavior so you’ll now have the answer to your question: why does my dog sit at my feet.

Your Dog Is Guarding You

So…why does my dog sit at my feet? The first reason why your dogs sit at your feet is because they are guarding you. It is a dog’s best interest to show you their unconditional love and of course, there isn’t anything like it. Being protective and guarding you wherever you go is just one of the many ways that they show it.

According to the post at: https://www.cuteness.com/blog/content/why-does-my-puppy-sit-on-my-feet dogs don’t necessarily sit at your feet and guard you out of fear. They do this behavior because it’s their way of showing that they want to keep you to themselves. One thing about dogs is that they love their attention, and you better believe that they do all that they can to keep it.

Marking Their Territory/Ownership

On a more social note, dogs will set at your feet to mark their territory and to make an open statement to the other dogs. If you’re at a dog park, for instance, your dog will definitely perform this behavior. It’s their way of saying, “He/she is taken so back off!” In our minds we think that we own our dog, but in their minds, it’s the other way around.

This is another point to support the reason they love our attention. Everyday we are bombarded with distractions that take our minds off of them. This is why they take full advantage of every opportunity to get our attention and keep it. Not good for you if you’re going to be around other people, but this is how they mark their territory.

Social Anxiety

Depending on your particular lifestyle and the time you spend away from your dogs, they could get social anxiety. While some dogs are okay with being left alone for great lengths of time, some aren’t. This is more often seen in cases when you go away on a trip, or if you’re a service member overseas. Once you return, it will be very common for your dogs to follow you around and sit at your feet. They miss your touch, they miss being around you, and of course, they never want you to leave them alone again.
