Inspite of Swachchh Bharat Mission which is being hailed as a successful government initiative, India is a nation where ‘How and Where to Spit’ is a major issue. Even the dreadful Covid has failed in changing this very important societal behaviour.

Early morning a big car stops at a famous park in one of the state capital city of India. The park is well maintained and is extensively used by morning walkers. From this big car, an elderly person around 50-55 years gets down. He is well dressed in walking attire and exhibits an overall good personality. After getting down, he looks around, sees people engaged in their activities. He then bends backwards and thereafter with a full force and jerk ‘Spits’. He looks around again and then begins morning walk. Prakash watches the complete action with full attention, amusement but most importantly, lot of concern.
Above two incidents involve two class of people. One travels in a shared auto rickshaw and the other in a big luxury car. Both have common behaviour towards Spit.
Are these isolated cases? Sadly, no.
Friendly Neighbours

India has a good concept of friendly neighbours. They spend maximum time together. It starts with early morning physical meeting, chatting, brushing teeth together and of course, Spitting in front of own homes. This is how most of India grows, watching elders Spit all over, even in front of own homes.
‘Do not Spit’ to ‘Spit’ Boards
‘Do not Spit’ boards are common in public places in India. Such boards are painful reminders of the low in our society values and behaviours. If this is not enough, most boards are changed to indicate ‘Spit’ and ‘Do not’ is erased.
Why Discussion on Spit?
Of all waste that needs to be taken out of body, Spit is most common and can be taken out anywhere. It does not involve private parts, therefore, male, female, transgender from all age groups can spit anywhere, anytime. Blowing nose is another waste to be taken out without use of private parts, however its frequency is less compared to Spit but is an equally bad behaviour.
Spit is also not only about behaviour. It is about Style too. There is a wide variety of Ghutka/ Pan Masala/local herbs and leaves which both male and female consume. This is a big market with top bollywood stars sponsoring products. These products are mainly responsible for creating more saliva and people exhibit varied styles and manners to spit the same.

From above it can also be stated that Spit is mostly artificially generated in mouth (unlike food or water products which go through a biological process inside the body and turn into waste) and therefore is in abundance. Product intake and waste (Spit) can be anywhere, anytime. It is the biggest curse due to related health and hygiene issues of society at large.
Spit Management
Spit Management is a complex problem. It is about human and human behaviour. It does not or should not involve systems or technology because it is more important for human to understand this aspect and change themselves.
Spit Behaviour : A Societal Curse
Cleanliness is Godliness. If this is true, how will we ever see our Gods by spitting everywhere. When we say ‘Earth is our Mother’, how can we spit on Motherland? When we worship our rivers, how can we spit in our rivers? When we spit in front of our own homes, are we not stopping our Gods coming into our homes?
Our present Spit behaviour is a societal curse. It disrespects everything we are taught to respect. We must change.
