Why Do They Call It Cornhole

If you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, then why not change the cover to fit the book?

That would seem the appropriate response to concern over the name “Cornhole,” the popular bag-tossing game with a name that’s also slang for a certain physical act. Some people call it Bags or Baggo or Beanbag.

But the name Cornhole is still the game’s most popular title. The game’s two governing bodies use Cornhole in their names. A Cincinnati-born filmmaker is producing “Cornhole: The Movie.”

And this Saturday, Soldier Field will host the first-ever Windy City Cornhole Classic. I guess “Baggo Tournament” doesn’t have the same ring.

It doesn’t.

Cornhole is a word with an R-rated connotation, but it’s also the easiest and most literal way to explain the game. Why is it called Cornhole? Because the object is to throw a corn kernel-filled bag into a 6-inch hole cut into a tilted platform.

And that should be the only definition, says Mike Whitton, founder of the American Cornhole Association.

“We’re trying to change the definition. Slowly, but surely, we’re getting there,” Whitton says. “I’m sure [my father] would throw a fit if he knew his baby boy was president of the American Cornhole Association. At some point, we’re going to make it an acceptable name.”

I agree. It’s not the name that’s the problem. It’s what we associate with the name. If someone asks me if I want to play Cornhole, the last thing I’m thinking of is the R-rated definition. I’m thinking high-arching shots, underhand pitching, a 1-pound bag of corn kernels in my hand and a Miller Lite bottle in the other.

So maybe it’s not changing the cover to fit the book. Maybe it’s the other way around, changing the definition to fit the name.

That’s what I’m doing. Call it what you want. I call it “Cornhole.”
