It appears Dusty is taking every precaution to prevent contracting the virus, especially because he has had many health scares in the past.
He was diagnosed with cancer 20 years ago and had a stroke seven years ago.
“I still wear a mask because I had cancer 20 years ago and I had a stroke seven years ago,” Baker told The Houston Chronicle. “Some of the fans get on me, ‘Take your mask off.’ … You don’t have to wear it, but it’s in my best interest to wear it.”
Jayson Stark of The Athletic also commented that Baker had been seen wearing gloves at a gas station early in the pandemic. Dusty was said to be “wiping things down” religiously.

Baker is certainly one of the more flamboyant characters in MLB, evidenced by his game-day attire.
Dusty has a habit of spitting, something he has had to stop during covid, and is likely one of the reasons for wearing a mask.
He told The Athletic that stopping spitting was going to be “quite a challenge.”

Per the outlet, he added: “Now the biggest challenge is gonna be what my mom has been chastising me about my whole life — spitting. I am not kidding you. That’s the first thing my wife asked me. She goes, ‘How you gonna stop spitting?’ I don’t know. And my mom, I swear — she has been getting on me since I was 10 years old about spitting. Know what I mean? And I used to practice spitting. I’m the most accurate spitter in the world.”
Dusty also chews on a toothpick regularly, and can often be seen with it in his mouth.
Then there’s various other accessories he wears.
Backer wears sweatbands up and down his arms, as well as a Fitbit.
The 72-year-old has worn sweatbands for years, which was thought to help him with sweating during intense games.
However, former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Homer Bailey said it was more to do with Baker keeping continuity from his playing days to his coaching days.
“I think he does the wristbands and the toothpicks because he was a player,” he told ESPN.
“To him, he’s still playing. He’s just playing a different position, if you will. Bobby Cox wore spikes for years, and nobody gave him [grief] about that. And he’s not sliding into third base any time soon.”
