I’ll be sharing my take on why Gogeta smiled at Broly.

This was a film that was released in 2018 and on the list as one of the best Dragon Ball movies to date.
You can find it on multiple streaming platforms.
I came about doing an article on this movie because it’s one of my favorite Dragon Ball movies for multiple reasons.
There’s a lot of great things about this movie that fans all over can talk about, but obviously we’re gonna talk about Gogeta.
So without further ado let’s get into it.
Why Did Gogeta Smile At Broly
This only happens because Gogeta realized that Broly isn’t completely evil.
He uses a move that’s popular with the character called the Stardust Breaker/Soul Punisher that’s meant to destroy an evil foe from the inside out.
Dragon Ball Super
Dragon Ball Super is an action show (anime specifically) that’s on its 2nd season.
It’s set in the same timeframe of the original Dragon Ball manga and follows the adventures of Goku and his friends after the 10 year time skip of the Majin Buu Saga.
The show is available in both the sub and the dub, on top of that also has a manga that you can follow along with as well.
There’s expectations for a season 2 that should be coming sometime in November 2023 to keep up with the latest chapters of the manga.
There’s a couple movies that go along with the anime:
- Dragon Ball Super Broly
- Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero
Although there aren’t any Super games, there are a few titles that include Dragon Ball Super fighters in it.
A few that come to mind are:
- Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
- Dragon Ball FighterZ
- Dragon Ball Xenoverse

Dragon Ball Super Broly
Stardust Breaker
The Stardust Breaker is the final finishing move for Gogeta and is also called the Soul Punisher as well.
It’s a powerful energy sphere that enters the body of his opponent and destroys his opponent from the inside out if they’re evil.
We’ve seen it before used successfully in the non canon movie Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn against the main villain Super Janemba.
Also known as the Soul Punisher it’s definitely one of the most iconic finisher moves by any Z fighter in the series.
Goku and Vegeta fused
What if I told you that there’s more than one fusion that Goku and Vegeta can make?
Well that’s what I’m saying!
There’s more than just Gogeta.
Gogeta is simply the Metamoran Fusion that occurs when they do the Metamoran dance which is actually the same technique that Goten and Trunks use to create Gotenks.
However, when they fuse with the assistance of the Potarra Earrings, they also create one of the strongest fighters we see yet; Vegito.
Vegito
Vegito is first introduced in Dragon Ball Z where he appears to fight an absurdly powerful Super Buu that absorbed Piccolo, Gotenks and Ultimate Gohan.
If you observe his character you might notice that this version of fusion between the 2 appears to be way more cocky than Gogeta.

In defense though his cockiness is pretty justified when looking at how bad he was destroying Buu.
In all honesty he could’ve even ended the entire saga before we even got introduced to Kid Buu but where’s the fun in that?
Nonetheless he’s without a doubt the strongest in Z and arguably one of the strongest even in Super.
The catch with this fusion is that it only lasts one hour but it’s kind of hard to see anybody that would even be able to hand with him for so long, so just a point of emphasis I wanted to mention.

Why Did Gogeta Want To Kill Broly
Gogeta was trying to stop Broly from destroying the planet.
Broly’s rage alone was causing volcanoes to erupt, destroy icebergs and even break reality itself.
That was too much of a risk to keep him alive at that point for Gogeta because if he let him go the earth’s done for.
Although Goku would prefer to keep someone alive if he fights them, Vegeta still wanted to kill him when fighting alone.
I guess you could say that part of the personality took over in the fight.
what happened when gogeta fought broly?
Their powers were colliding at forces that most notably broke reality itself for a while.
It’s impressive seeing that it was stemming from hand to hand combat and it was the first time we see it happen in the series at this magnitude.
Goku and Beerus had their shakeup of world shaking power in Battle of the Gods, but this was different.
The only other time reality was ripped that we could remember was when Super Buu ripped time open in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
Final Thoughts
My gogeta smile theory is simply what’s confirmed.
Gogeta’s excitement for a challenging fighter favors Goku’s personality.
At the same time he cares about who he’s fighting and would avoid killing them if there’s a chance they’re good.
There had to be some level of relieve that Gogeta had in realizing that this new Saiyan warrior could potentially be good.
Goku and Vegeta love to train, and finding another Saiyan that could help them push their limits could serve them well in the future.
That Stardust breaker functioned as an indicator that told Gogeta everything he needed to know about Broly.
