Why Does Kokushibo Have 6 Eyes

The Demons of Demon Slayer are a truly fascinating lot. They come in all shapes and sizes, and while they are evil in their demonic form, their backstories and their lives while they were human usually contain a very tragic note that makes you feel sad for them. But, there are also exceptions, and one such exception is the protagonist of this article – Kokushibo. The Upper-Rank One of the Twelve Kizuki, Kokushibo was the second strongest Demon in the whole lore, behind only Muzan, but also very near his level of power. In this article, though, we are going to focus on Kokushibo’s apperance, rather than on his powers, as you are going to find out why he has six eyes in the series.

The precise reason why Kokushibo has six eyes was never revealed and is out-of-universe. It was probably just a design-related decision by the author. In-universe, Kokushibo probably manipulated his flesh to have six eyes, probably increasing his vision and perception. It might also be symbolic, as the Yorrichi Type Zero doll has six arms, but that was never elaborated on.

The remainder of this article will give you a detailed overview of Kokushibo’s story, as it happened on the pages of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga. You already know what happened and how it happened, so we will just bring you the details so you know the whole context. Be careful, though, as the article will contain many spoilers, so if you don’t know all the details, be careful how you approach the text.

Kokushibo became a Demon to rival his brother

Twins were regarded as a particularly bad omen during the Sengoku period when Yoriichi and his twin brother Michikatsu were born into the Tsugikuni clan. Yoriichi’s father threatened to kill him because of a peculiar birthmark on his son’s forehead, but their mother, Akeno, became enraged and detained him. It was ultimately decided that Yoriichi would be sent to a temple at the age of ten to become a monk. Despite this, Michikatsu was heavily envious of his brother, and the two had a very difficult relationship.

It was revealed that as a human, Kokushibo harbored an immense sense of envy towards his younger twin brother, Yoriichi Tsugikuni, for his natural talent and incredible abilities. These feelings of jealousy and contempt grew stronger when he saw his brother grow into an old man despite Yoriichi awakening his demon slayer mark, which was supposed to doom him to die at the age of 25.

However, despite this immense jealousy, spite, and outright hatred he harbored for Yoriichi, he still loved his brother deeply, as seen when he was touched by Yoriichi, cherishing the handmade flute he had made for him when he was a child. The two of them would face off on the day of Yoriichi’s death, and while Yoriichi was a slice away from killing Kokushibo, he died during the fight while standing on his feet. Kokushibo himself admitted that even with all of his demonic powers and enhancements, he would not have been able to beat Yoriichi, even though his twin was both blind and well into his 80s when the two faced each other at that time.

The six eyes could be practical or symbolic

Now, with Kokushibo’s story explained, we have to confirm that the reason why Kokushibo has six eyes was never explained. As we know, Kokushibo had a very peculiar appearance. Kokushibo was a demon that, although having consumed countless humans for 400 years, still had human features. His long, black hair with burgundy ends was pulled back in a long ponytail, almost reaching his lower back. He also kept several other pretty peculiar qualities. He was a tall man with a pale skin tone and an athletic, muscular frame.

He had a series of flame-like marks on his face, covering the right side of his neck and the left side of his skull; these marks were his Hunter’s Mark during his human form. Kokushibo’s three pairs of eyebrowless eyes, each with a yellowish iris and a segmented crimson sclera, were his most distinguishing characteristic and, consequently, one of his most sinister distinguishing features. He is numbered as the Upper Moon One in the center’s eyes, which corresponds to the kanji for “Upper-Rank One,” denoting his dominant status among the Upper Moons.

As you can see, he looked mostly like a regular human, save for the six eyes. Michikatsu Tsugikuni had two eyes, but why that changed was never revealed. It wasn’t even revealed whether the transformation itself caused it or whether Kokushibo personally intervened on his face to add the four additional eyes. In the case of the latter, there could have two possible reasons why Kokushibo decided to do that.

The first is of a practical nature. Namely, with six eyes, Kokushibo would see more, and he would have a better perception of his surroundings. Six eyes mean more information and more information means a better position in a fight. Using such reasoning, it is understandable why Kokushibo would have intervened on his own appearance to make himself even stronger. (Yet, that did not help him in the fight against Yoriichi.) Another reason could be the importance of the number six for the Tsugikuni twins. Namely, we know that the Yoriichi Type Zero doll, which was constructed and kept hidden just outside the Swordsmith Village, has six arms and was never really explained.

Building on this, it could be possible that the number six had some important meaning for the Tsugikuni twins, which would explain the doll’s arms and Kokushibo’s eyes. Or, it could be just that Kokushibo wanted to be on par with the doll, as it is thoroughly possible that he encountered it or heard of it at some point in his life. Be that as it may, the exact reason is unknown, but we have provided some possible explanations.
