Why Does Mel Quit The Clinic

After more than a year-long hiatus, Virgin River is returning to Netflix for a highly-anticipated Season 5. But before we catch up with Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge), Jack (Martin Henderson), Doc (Tim Matheson), Hope (Annette O’Toole), and the rest of the small, dramatic town, we need to remember how we left everyone.

Ahead of Virgin River‘s Season 5 premiere on September 7, Decider is taking a look back at some of Season 4’s most noteworthy storylines, cliffhangers, character developments, and unanswered questions. Fans of the series, based on Robyn Carr’s beloved novels, know it’s never a dull moment in Virgin River. But if you’ve forgotten just how chaotic things got in the Season 4 finale, we’ve got you covered.

Looking for a Season 4 recap ahead of Virgin River Season 5’s premiere? Decider’s recap of Virgin River Season 4, Episode 12, “Be My Baby,” is here to help. Here are 10 things to remember before diving back into Virgin River.

  1. Jack And Mel Are Engaged And He’s The Father Of Her Baby

Season 3 ended with Mel telling Jack she was pregnant, but also that she went to a fertility clinic to access old embryos she’d frozen with her late husband Mark, so she wasn’t sure if Jack was the father. The questions of the baby’s paternity and Mel and Jack’s fate as a couple loomed throughout Season 4, but in the finale, Jack asked Mel to marry him, she said yes, and they later learned he is the biological father of their soon-to-be baby girl.

  2. Both Mel And Dr. Cameron Hayek Were Considering Leaving The Clinic

Things at the clinic got awkward for Mel and Dr. Cameron Hayek after he questioned Jack’s drinking and suggested he wasn’t the right guy for her. So post-engagement, Hot Doctor Cam decided to leave Virgin River and head back to San Diego. Since Mel knew she’d eventually have to go on maternity leave, she resigned from the clinic in hopes that Cameron would stay and help Doc run things in her absence. So who will stay and who will go? Season 5 will have to address this storyline as well.

  3. Doc And Hope Need Help

We’ve already established that Doc needs help in the office, but Season 4 also focused on his battle with macular degeneration, so we expect that will be further addressed in Season 5. On top of that, Doc still has to hire a daily aid to assist Hope. Lizzie was at the top of her wish list, but will she take the job?

  4. Denny Finally Shared His Huntington’s Disease Diagnosis

Denny finally revealed his big Season 4 secret to crush Lizzie, saying, “The reason I can’t be with you is because I don’t have a future. I have Huntington’s Disease, which is terminal.” We imagine Season 5 will explore next steps for Denny and his family, along with his place in Virgin River and his relationship with Lizzie, who’s now single, because…

  5. Ricky Left Virgin River To Join The Marines

At the end of Season 4, Ricky was officially out of the picture. Lizzie and the rest of the town gave him a heartfelt sendoff before he hopped a bus to join the Marines. It’s unclear if his character will return for Season 5, but if he doesn’t, at least now you’ll remember why.

  6. Brady And Brie Were Back On Track

After a whirlwind season for Brady and Brie, the two ended things on a hopeful note couple-wise. Thanks to a tip from Brie, Mike was able to solve the mystery of Jack’s shooting and the DEA dropped all charges against Brady. Turns out, the gun used to shoot Jack — which was found in Brady’s truck — belonged to Vince, the twin brother of Paige’s abusive ex-husband Wes.

  7. Preacher, And Paige, And Vince — Oh My!

Speaking of Vince, in the Season 4 finale, Preacher finally tracked down Paige, who agreed to turn herself in to Wes’ brother Vince in exchange for her son Christopher’s freedom. Preacher found Vince and Paige in a cabin in the woods, and after Vince admitted to shooting Jack, Preacher smacked him over the head with a wooden log and he fell to the floor. Will Preacher be let off the hook? And will he keep pursuing a romance with Julia (Lucia Walters) or pick up where he left off with Paige?

  8. An Unwelcome Visitor Arrived In Virgin River

Though Brady and Brie seemed to be back on track, we also learned that Brie was raped by an attorney she was dating back in Sacramento. In the Season 4 finale, the attorney showed up in Virgin River and asked her to sign an NDA. She told him she’d file a police report and press charges, so we imagine Season 5 will show her testifying against the man in court and struggling to relive that trauma.

  9. Melissa Set Her Sights On Jack (And Someone Set Sights On Melissa)

Mel and Jack, who went to a celebratory engagement dinner with their friends Nick and Jo Ellen, were introduced to Nick’s sister, Melissa Montgomery aka gang leader Calvin’s terrifying boss who may or may not have had him killed. While they were mingling, someone was in the parking lot snapping photos of them, so we have a feeling that person — and their motive — will be revealed in Season 5.

  10. Jack Isn’t The Father Of Charmaine’s Twins

Although Jack may be the father of Mel’s baby, in a shocking, last-minute Season 4 twist, Charmaine revealed that she lied about the paternity of her twin boys, and Jack ISN’T the father after all. So who the heck is?! And why did she lie? Hopefully, Season 5 has all the answers we crave.
