Easy Ways to Fix FaceTime Issues, Errors & Problems

Is FaceTime not connecting, or is FaceTime down? What do you do if FaceTime won’t connect? Are you trying to FaceTime but find that, after about five minutes, one of you in the conversation gets the “FaceTime Not Connecting” error message, and it stays until you retry the call? Here’s what to do about a poor connection on FaceTime:

  • Run an internet speed test on your network and make sure that it’s reaching 5 Mbps or greater. Low data speeds often cause problems with FaceTime.
  • Make sure that all devices on the FaceTime call are using the same version of iOS, iPadOS, or MacOS. Anecdotal evidence suggests this may correct your poor connection in FaceTime.
  • Is FaceTime down? Check the Apple System Status page to see if there’s a green dot next to FaceTime. If not, FaceTime is down.
  • Is FaceTime free internationally? Yes, but it isn’t available worldwide. Check with Apple to see if FaceTime is available. If long-distance FaceTime calls are not working on an iPhone, you may still be able to use FaceTime with a VPN.

Here are several other simple things you can do to get FaceTime working again :

  • Reboot your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac.
  • Look to see if there’s a new iPadOS, macOS, or iOS update available for your device.
  • Check your Screen Time Settings to make sure FaceTime is always allowed.

Check Your Wi-Fi or Cellular FaceTime Settings

You may have a poor connection on FaceTime because of your Wi-Fi or cellular connection. An easy way to fix this FaceTime issue is to check that the device you are using has a Wi-Fi or cellular connection; you can check this in the Control Center or at the top of your iPhone screen. Also, make sure that you can use FaceTime without Wi-Fi by making sure cellular data is enabled for FaceTime in your Settings.
