Why Does My Verizon Service Suck

My Verizon cell phone was receiving adequate coverage over the last two years, after which, without apparent reason, it began to go wrong and even turn off from time to time.

I have had difficulty placing calls and receiving them, and my data connection is almost redundant.

I decided to try and find a solution to the problem myself and began to search the internet for possible solutions to this problem.

Having read articles and user reports as well as communications between Verizon and its customers online, I finally arrived at a series of troubleshooting steps to be followed to try and get the connection to work.

If your Verizon service suddenly turns bad, you must first check where the problem is, whether with a damaged SIM card, an inactive or flagged account, unpaid dues, or being out of coverage.

In this article, I have talked about various troubleshooting procedures that you can follow to try and solve the problem, including restarting your phone, toggling the airplane mode on and off, looking for local interference, and checking if you are in the coverage area.

Reason for Verizon not Working

There are several possible reasons for your Verizon service not working, and here I have tried to highlight a stepwise procedure to check and troubleshoot to see the cause of this problem.

Network Outage

A network outage implies that there is an unexpected disruption to several cell sites at the same time.

Network outage implies not weak or poor network coverage but rather a complete absence.

The surest way to check if there is a network outage in your area is to sign into My Verizon:

  • You will see a Network Notification icon at the top of your screen if Verizon knows there is a network outage in the area.
  • You can also enter “network outage” in the chat if there is no update on the app to gain more information on the matter.

If no information is available and you are still experiencing a network outage, you can check the network outage and troubleshooting information.

Damaged SIM Card

A damaged SIM card can also lead to Verizon not working on your phone. To check for damage to your SIM, you must remove and inspect the SIM card.

You need to check for bends, scratches and contact issues, and other problems that could hamper the adequate functioning of your SIM card.

If there are no such issues, you should try reinstalling your SIM card.

Inactive Account

In case your Verizon service has suddenly stopped working, it might be the case that your account has turned inactive.

This can happen due to a missed bill payment, particularly if you are paying the bills manually.

To check if this is the issue, you can call Verizon customer service to check if your account is active or log in to the Verizon website from your account to check if there is an issue with your account.

Flagged Account

Making changes to your account can lead Verizon to flag your account, which can lead to an interruption of your Verizon services.

Accounts can also be flagged if any illegitimate activity is suspected on your phone, even if you haven’t done anything.

If you are not receiving Verizon services on your phone, you must contact Verizon customer care to check if your account has been flagged.

Unpaid Dues

Unpaid bills and other dues to Verizon can result in your account being disconnected.

Verizon does provide around a three-week grace period for the payment of the bill.

Late charges follow for around 10 days, after which the account is disconnected.

If your phone is disconnected due to unpaid dues, you need to contact Verizon customer service to try and reactivate your phone.

Out of Coverage Area

Verizon has the most extensive network provider coverage in the USA and is known for providing the most reliable coverage in rural areas.

However, despite this, there is always the possibility that you will fall out of the network coverage area.

In some rural areas, the coverage might be more spotty if you are traveling, walking down a road, or visiting an area with lower coverage.

Verizon has the best coverage in Arkansas, Georgia, and Kansas, all covered entirely by the service, while its coverage is the lowest in the states of West Virginia, Montana, Nevada, and Alaska.

The coverage in Alaska is abysmally low at around 2%, and the coverage in the other three states varies between 40-50%.

Restart Your Phone

Restarting your phone might be valuable as a troubleshooting action, especially if you have not done so in quite a while.

It might be helpful to reboot the device regularly to keep it functioning in optimal condition.

Sometimes the Random Access Memory and other live processes on the phone can also create issues accessing your mobile service.

Turn the Airplane Mode on and off

Occasionally Verizon might not be working due to a connection bug. In this case, it might be helpful to toggle on and off the airplane mode on your phone to fix this error.

Toggling the airplane mode on and off will refresh your network connection and thus possibly fix the problem.

Look for Nearby Interference

Occasionally the device case might interfere with the proper functioning of the device.

If the device case has a magnetic component, such as the front cover lid, this might interfere with network receptivity on your phone.

It might be a valuable step to remove your device case and check to see if your phone is working once the case is removed.

Other common factors causing local interference might be in-building issues, foliage, construction, population changes, and cell-site changes, which include tower changes, antenna adjustments, and power adjustments.

Check if you are in Coverage Area

This problem is often reported while traveling or if you have recently bought a new phone.

To check if you are in the coverage area, you can try out Verizon’s network coverage map to check if you are in an area where Verizon provides network coverage.

Change the Operator Settings

The device often does not pick up mobile coverage due to a problem with the network operator settings. In such cases, manually selecting your network operator might be valuable.

To manually select your network operator on android, you need to:

  • Navigate to the settings tab on your phone
  • On the settings tab, select the mobile networks option
  • Look for the network operator
  • Choose the manually select network operator option
  • Select Verizon from the list

To manually select a network operator on iPhone, you need to:

  • Navigate to the setting tab on your phone
  • On the settings tab, select the ‘cellular’ option
  • Tap on network selection and untick it
  • Select Verizon from the list

Sometimes you may have to restart your phone after manually selecting your network operator for the procedure to work.

Check if there is Network Outage

To check if there is a network outage, you must first turn off Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi calling to ensure that you are connected to the Verizon network.

From here, you can follow this series of troubleshooting steps to check if the problem is a network outage:

  • Check the status bars on your device. The bars will be blinking if you are in an area with low connectivity. In this case, you need to restart your device and wait till you are in an area with better connectivity.
  • Ensure that airplane mode is toggled off
  • Change your Wi-Fi calling to cellular.
  • Ensure that your device is updated and that you have the most recent software installed
  • Log in to your My Verizon page and check the device overview section to see if there is an outage in your area. In this case, Verizon will usually have posted an update.
  • Check your SIM card for marks and scratches.

Visit the Nearest Customer Care Centre

If these troubleshooting steps do not work, the next best solution would be to visit the nearest customer care center.

This can be done relatively quickly using the Verizon store locator page.

Get a SIM Replacement

Verizon SIM cards are offered free by the Verizon service.

To replace a Verizon SIM card, you can order a SIM card online:

  • You can have the card mailed to you.
  • Or you can order the SIM card online and collect it at a Verizon retail store or an authorized dealer. Your location choices will be limited by where the SIM card is available.

You could also go to a Verizon store and obtain the card over the counter within the day or go to an authorized retail store and obtain the SIM card within three days.

Final Thoughts

The problem might also be with your phone’s Access Point Names (APN). APNs usually deal with mobile data, but it is a chance that it also affects whether your network is toggled correctly or not.

To reset the APN on your phone, you need to navigate to the settings tab on your phone and from there to connections and finally to APN. Once you are on the APN settings tab, you must fill in the blank fields.

For the name, enter Verizon. For MCC, enter 310. For the APN type, enter “internet+mms.” For the APN section, enter “vzwinternet.” For the MNC, enter 12. For the MMSC, enter “mm.vtext.com/servlets/mms,” and finally, for the MMS port, enter 80.
