A landfill fire broke out over the weekend on the Salt River Indian Reservation. While authorities said there was no immediate threat to the public, Valley residents could expect lingering smoke and should take precautions while crews worked to completely extinguish the fire.
On Saturday, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community said in a Facebook post that fire crews were addressing a green waste fire that occurred at the Salt River Landfill off Beeline Highway and Gilbert Road, northeast of Scottsdale and Mesa.

The post said that the fire was contained to a mound of green waste within the landfill. Salt River Landfill personnel were supported by the Salt River fire crews.
On Monday morning, Salt River Fire said the fire was smoldering, meaning it was burning without a flame. Valley residents could continue to expect smells of smoke.

There was no immediate threat to public safety. The cause of the fire was not listed.
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community posted an update on Facebook on Monday night about the ongoing efforts to completely extinguish the fire.
According to the post, landfill personnel were focused on separating smoldering piles to allow water trucks better access to spray down the affected areas. Crews planned to work in a west-to-east direction to systematically address those piles.
Crews made progress, but there were still several smoldering piles. It was expected to take a few days to completely extinguish the fire.

The Facebook post stated that the fire was contained and reassured the public that there was no immediate threat. Air quality continued to be the primary concern.
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community environmental protection and natural resources team was actively monitoring the air quality. Residents near the landfill were urged to take precautions, such as staying indoors, closing windows and doors and using air purifiers, if available. Individuals with respiratory conditions or sensitivities were advised to exercise extra caution.
To enhance the response to the fire, the landfill crews were collaborating with the green waste contractor and utilizing additional water trucks from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community public works department.
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community said anyone with concerns should call nonemergency dispatch at 480-850-9230.
