Why Doesn’t Akaza Kill Woman

Already, flipped back through some details, and I’m ready to take a crack at this answer! In essense: I don’t think Douma ever formally requested a promotion over Akaza and engaged him in battle. But, falling into their places as #2 and #3 may have occurred before that system of applying for moving up in the ranks was formalized in Demons Inc.

First off, if my guesses on this timeline are reasonable, Akaza hadn’t been a demon that long before Douma, but order is still order. Since Akaza has a preference for training and Douma has no shame whatsoever about snacking on a bunch of people (for nutrition~!), it’s unsurprisingly that Douma would had gained strength faster, but since Muzan has been shown to select some demons based on their innate potential, Douma may have had more latent ability all along. We don’t know exactly how long the Twelve Moons have been a thing, or how old they all are. While Kokushibo has been getting stronger for (by his account) four hundred years (though I believe between 300~400 would be more accurate), Douma and Akaza have probably only been demons for about 130 years at the most (by my estimates). Muzan had clearly set his mind to making the set of strong demons by that point, but who knows how long Hantengu and Gyokko might had already been around (seems he had no intention of Gyokko getting very strong, he just did). While he did create Akaza, Douma, and Gyutaro under that mindset, he might not had thought about assigning ranks until later. Hantengu says the Upper Moons have not been assembled in 113 years, but we don’t know how often they assembled before that. It’s possible that they were only assembled upon first formal rank assignment and then not again until Gyutaro was killed, or that the rules that govern the Upper Moon came into being over the course of a few meetings (probably held closer together). For all we know, some of that might had been in response to Akaza complaining about Douma being so annoying since becoming (a big pile of) #2, and Douma complaining that Akaza gets special treatment since he gets away with stuff like letting female demon slayers get away alive. It might had been to shut them up a bit that Muzan introduced the “application” system for going up in rank, though it doesn’t seem to have been utilized much, if at all. Demons know they have to be super ready for it, for a demon like Kokushibo will just plain swallow them up. The consequences of losing must be enough to keep them in line. I’ll bet the Lower Moons shift around a lot, though, not just when there are openings. Hairo, for instance, was only a demon about fifty years before attaining Lower Moon 2. ANYWAY I’VE GOTTEN SUPER OFF TRACK!!I meant to bring up a key word on this page especially:

While Douma is being a jerk and rubbing things in about how Akaza wouldn’t be able to win if he formally challenged for the #1 or #2 spots anyway, he refers to Akaza “making an application” to challenge them, but when he points out how he (Douma) became a demon later than Akaza but still got ahead of him, he uses a verb that more generally means “attain success” or “move up in one’s career.” So it might had been that it took Muzan a few years to form the Twelve Moons but told them to go get stronger and aim to please him. During that time, Akaza would had been striving for that a while already (maybe months, maybe a decade) when Douma comes out of nowhere and pulls ahead of him, and then is later pronounced #2 while Akaza is only pronounced #3. I mean, maybe there was another #3 and Akaza already formally killed that one, who knows.Point being, hate to say it, but these two have probably never had a formal battle, and while Kokushibo is fond enough of Akaza to let him off, Douma probably would not and would rub it in as he killed him, playing it off as “you chose to do this yourself, you know, I’m just following the rules.”
