Why Halloween Haram

We need first to know what the Halloween festival is. Knowing the aspects of a matter, identifying it, and realizing its roots and origins assist in understanding it. Accordingly, it becomes easy to be persuaded. So let’s start with a hint about Halloween.

Is Halloween Haram in Islam?

The direct answer to this question is; absolutely yes. It is forbidden to celebrate Halloween. Muslims can’t celebrate Halloween for several reasons mentioned below as well as the horrible and non-Muslim rituals and beliefs mentioned in another article (What Is The True History Of Halloween?).

In addition, According to the recent fatwas issued by prominent Islamic legal scholars and through consultation with Al Azhar Ash Sharif Foundation, and according to the four main legal schools of fiqh as the books of fiqh mentioned:

“Asking intercession from… those in the tombs by praying through them and asking intercession is invalid and is an act of atheism.”

Why Is Celebrating Halloween by Muslims forbidden (Haram)?

We will try to present in this section the logical and religious reasons from an Islamic perspective behind the prohibition of Celebrating the Halloween ceremony by Muslims. Here are the Reasons Behind Halloween Prohibition:

1. Imitating Non- Muslims

Our prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us not to imitate non-Muslims. He even warned against doing so.

Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever imitates a people is one of them.

2. Mocking The Dead Is Not an Ethical Matter in Islam

All of us will be dead one day. We are alive today, tomorrow we are dead. It is not a respectful manner or ethical issue to mock our past dead ancestors. It is not ethical to light fire -according to non-Muslims’ beliefs- to prevent their spirits from approaching.

This is a humiliating way to deal with our dead spirits. It reflects if they are disgusting dirty creatures. Islam taught us how to respect the dead. Islam told us to pray for them, visit their graves, not shout or talk so loudly at their graves, not to step on their graves, and not to light a fire there. That is Islam.

There are many Ahadith that emphasize desecrating the dead like harming the living. Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, said:

Breaking the bones of a dead person is like breaking them when he is alive.كَسْرُ عَظْمِ الْمَيِّتِ كَكَسْرِهِ حَيًّا

3. Human dignity in Islam is for both the dead and the living

In Islam, human dignity for both the dead and the living is a right given by Allah the Most Merciful to all humans—who are referred to in the Qur’ān as a human beings is Allah’s vicegerent on earth. Islam grants specific rights to humans before they are even born and even after their death.

Whether dead or living, the human spirit, and the human body were both created by Allah the Almighty in perfect shape so it must be given dignity and respect.

The importance and value of the human body are illustrated, for instance, in the Holy Qur’ān. Allah said:

“Then God sent a raven digging the ground, to show him how to cover his brother’s corpse. He said, “Woe to me! I was unable to be like this raven, and bury my brother’s corpse.” So he became full of regrets.”

Surah Al Ma’idah verse,31.

There, it is narrated that when Adam’s son Cain was unsure of how to deal with the body of his brother Abel—whom he had killed — Allah sent a message in the form of a raven bird.

Allah ordered the raven to dig into the ground to bury another raven, thus indirectly showing Cain how to bury his brother’s body. Aisha reported: The Prophet,(peace and blessings be upon him) said:

Our Merciful Prophet ordered us not to frighten each other. There are some Ahadith on Pranks. He told us that it is not allowed to scare, frighten another Muslim.

5. Taking the Jews And The Christians As Allies Is Not Allowed In Islam

Allah the wisest warned us against taking Jews and Christians as allies. The Almighty said in the Holy Quran:

O you who believe! Do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies; some of them are allies of one another. Whoever of you allies himself with them is one of them. God does not guide the wrongdoing people.”

Surah Al- Ma’idah. Verses 50,51

6. Islamic jurisprudential prohibits Celebrating The Non-Muslims Religious Holidays

What are the Islamic Judgement concerning the participation of Muslims in Non-Muslims’ feasts?

Sharing Non-Muslims in their religious feasts- according to Islamic concepts and texts- is forbidden (haram). These feasts may also be connected to religious occasions, like many of the festivals concerning the Jews and Christians, such as the Thursday on which they claim the table was sent down to Jesus, Christmas, New Year’s, Thanksgiving, and holidays on which gifts are exchanged.

Some so-called Muslims participate in these holidays, out of ignorance or hypocrisy. Muslims are strictly prohibited from joining these religious festivals of the People of the Book and other unbelievers.

7. The Religious Feast is a Part Of The Religion

The feast days of each religion are religious rituals of this religion. And therefore the religious feasts of other religions are forbidden for Muslims. And it is not allowed for them to participate in. Aisha: Narrated, “

Abu Bakr came to my house while two small Ansari girls were singing beside me the stories of the Ansar concerning the Day of Buath. And they were not singers. Abu Bakr said protestingly:

“Musical instruments of Satan in the house of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) !” It happened on the `Id day and Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “O Abu Bakr! There is an `Id (feast) for every nation and this is our `Id.”

8. ALLAH Replaced the Muslim Nation With What is better

Allah replaced His worshippers with what is better than other people’s feasts. So the Festivals of ignorance was replaced by two Eid by Allah the Most Merciful.

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, (peace and blessings be upon him), arrived in Medina for two days which they were celebrating. The Prophet said,

“What are these two days?” They said, “We would celebrate these two days in the time of ignorance.” The Prophet said, “Verily, Allah has replaced these two days with two better days: Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr.” إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ أَبْدَلَكُمْ بِهِمَا خَيْرًا مِنْهُمَا يَوْمَ الْأَضْحَى وَيَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ

10. These are Acts Of Innovations And Heresy

These feasts and festivals are acts of innovation. Therefore, all such festivals and fairs which have come into vogue as a result of innovation are considered forbidden, whether these resemble the practice of the unbelievers or not.

According to the authority of the mother of the faithful, Aisha (R.A.), who said: Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.) said,

11. Perjury False Witness.

Allah says in the Holy Quran:

“And those who do not bear false witness; and when they come across indecencies, they pass by with dignity.”

وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَشْهَدُونَ الزُّورَ وَإِذَا مَرُّوا بِاللَّغْوِ مَرُّوا كِرَامًا.

Surah Furqan, verse 72.

12. Prohibition of Initiating Greetings

By analogy with the prohibition of initiating greetings, Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

Do not greet the Jews and the Christians before they greet you and when you meet any one of them on the roads force him to go to the narrowest part of it.

Sahih Muslim 2167.

13. The Prohibition Of The Bad Deeds And Reprehensible Acts Occurring in This Festival

All of us are certain about the bad Reprehensible acts( dance- wine …etc.) that occur on that day. How can we share

Them doing that!!

Is purchasing Halloween Outfits For Muslim Kids Forbidden( Haram)

The socalled Halloween festival is a kind of heathen that Muslims should not participate in in anyway.

The purchase of an unusual outfit for the child on this day, and the wearing of it signifies the occasion and It is considered an indirect participation in the festival.

Even If the outfits the parents bought for the child were different from other children’s unusual outfits, It is still Forbidden ( Haram). Since this child was dressed for the sake of this festival. Then, The intent is to share in the ceremony.

Umar ibn al-Khattab reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, said:

“Verily, deeds are only with intentions and every person will have only what they intended. Whoever emigrated to Allah and His Messenger, his emigration is for Allah and His Messenger. Whoever emigrated to get something in the world or to marry a woman, his emigration is for that to which he emigrated.”
