A Kansas Department of Transportation(KDOT) bridge replacement project requires full closure of northbound and southbound I-635 lanes and area I-635 ramps for bridge demolition from Friday, Feb. 23 at 8 p.m. to Monday, Feb. 26 at 5 a.m., weather permitting. Demolition and required temporary weekend closures are part of a project on the Metropolitan Avenue bridge over I-635 in Wyandotte County, which includes replacing the bridge, approach pavement, guardrails and traffic signals. The project is expected to be completed in December. During demolition, the following will be fully closed to traffic from 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23 to 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 26 at 5 a.m.:

  • Northbound I-635, Shawnee Drive to Swartz Road;
  • Southbound I-635, K-32 (Kansas Avenue) to Shawnee Drive;
  • Shawnee Drive to northbound I-635 entrance ramp;
  • K-32 (Kansas Avenue) to southbound I-635 ramp;
  • All northbound and southbound I-635/Metropolitan Avenue entrance and exit ramps.

Message boards have been placed in the area to notify motorists of the upcoming weekend closure. Detours will be marked as follows:

  • Northbound I-635: Traffic will be directed from the I-635/I-35 interchange to northbound I-35 to enter northbound U.S. 69 (18th Street Expressway) and continue north to exit at K-32 (Kansas Avenue) and travel west to enter northbound I-635.
  • Southbound I-635: Traffic will be directed from the I-635/K-32 (Kansas Avenue) interchange to eastbound K-32 (Kansas Avenue) to enter southbound U.S. 69 (18th Street Expressway) and continue south to enter southbound I-35, then to southbound I-635.

Traffic will be controlled using changeable message boards, signs, channelizers and barricades. Following demolition, for the duration of the project, entrance and exit ramps at the Metropolitan Avenue/I-635 interchange will be open and Metropolitan Avenue at I-635 will remain closed. Clarkson Construction, of Kansas City, Mo., is the contractor for the $6.2M project. KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a highway work zone.
