Why Is Auto Lock Grayed Out On Iphone

Auto-Lock is one of the default features in iPhone that will help to automatically lock the screen. You can setup the time in the settings and the iPhone will lock the screen based on the set time. This helps to stop unauthorized people from accessing your iPhone data and apps. For example, this feature will protect your iPhone when you are focusing on other tasks by leaving the phone on the office desk or dinner table.

Low Auto-Lock Time

Though useful, Auto-Lock can be easily annoying when the screen gets locked in every 30 seconds of idle time. iPhone will not lock the screen when it detects your face from the front sensor. However, you may focus away for 30 seconds while reading a lengthy email or a news article. In such a case, your iPhone will dim the screen and will automatically lock the screen before you bring your focus back. You need to look at the screen or tap/move the phone to make sure it is active and not locked automatically.

The more frustration will come when you see the Auto-Lock is disabled and you are not able to change the time to longer duration than 30 seconds. Here we will explain the reason for why the Auto-Lock is disabled on iPhone and how to manage it effectively.

Auto-Lock Settings in iPhone

Open “Settings” app and navigate to “Display & Brightness” section. Scroll down a bit and check “Auto-Lock” option. It should show the current time set, for example 30 seconds in the below screenshot.

Tap on “Auto-Lock” option and you will see the list of available timer options. Choose the best timing that’s suits your need from the options 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 4 minutes or 5 minutes. You can also set as “Never” so that the iPhone will never lock itself automatically. This is not recommended as it can consume more battery power as well as it can compromise your data security.

Why is Auto-Lock Disabled?

Sometimes you can’t change the Auto-Lock timer in iPhone settings page. the Auto-Lock setting will be disabled for editing with the lowest lock time set as 30 seconds. The problem is that even you had previously setup other duration like 3 minutes, iPhone will automatically change it to 30 seconds and freeze the Auto-Lock setting. This means, phone will be automatically locked every 30 seconds of idle time with no option to change.

Auto-Lock and Low Power Mode

If you are breaking your head with this problem, the solution is to check your battery level. You should be seeing the battery in yellow color indicating the phone is running on low power mode. It helps to stop background activities to reduce the consumption of phone’s battery. However, low power mode also will disable the Auto-Lock setting and set the time to the lowest 30 seconds. You can either put the phone back on power or disable low power mode in settings to allow editing the Auto-Lock timer.

By default, low power mode in iPhone is disabled. Your phone will show a warning pop-up when the battery level reaches 20% with an option to enable low power mode. If you do not want the Auto-Lock to freeze with 30 seconds, then select “Close” option to disable the low power mode. You should see the battery in red color in this case.

If you have tapped on “Low Power Mode” option, then you should manually disable low power mode to enable editing of Auto-Lock time. Open “Settings” app and go to “Battery” section. Low power mode is the first option you will see and tap on the switch to turn it off. Now you will see the battery color changes to white or red and you should be able to edit the Auto-Lock timer setting.

Alternatively, you can connect the phone to power cable and wait for the phone to charge sufficiently. When the iPhone reaches 80% charging level, it will show a notification mentioning battery sufficiently charged and the low power mode will be turned off. Now, you can change the Auto-Lock time as you wish.
