Why Is Bill Belichick Not In Madden

Bill Belichick is one of a kind. From his glib answers to media questions to his seeming contempt for traditional roster management, he’s one of football’s most eccentric coaches.

The Patriots coach is also different in the sense he doesn’t appear in the Madden franchise, the only video game licensed by the NFL. Instead, the Patriots are led by a nondescript man named “NE Coach,” or a myriad of randomly generated names.

Madden’s release is annually a huge video game event, and every year Belichick’s absence is noted.

Ironically, it’s exactly because EA Sports has the NFL license that Belichick is absent. Belichick is the one coach who isn’t part of the National Football League Coaches Association, and he hasn’t been part of the game since 2005. Because he owns his own likeness, EA Sports has had to replace Belichick with randomly generated characters.

Neither Belichick nor his mentor Bill Parcells are in the NFLCA, but there’s no stated reason why. In an article from Dan Wetzel in 2012, the question was broached, with no definitive answer.

Belichick loves this kind of stuff, say his friends and associates, who never want to be quoted when speaking in depth about him.

He loves it because he hates so much of the nonsense that surrounds football, has a longstanding disdain for the league office and carries a rebel streak that finds greater joy in making a defiant stand than cashing a check. Rather than give a ranting speech about the sideshow nature of the NFL, he’d prefer the passive-aggressive nature of a quiet protest and hope the world picks up on it.

With that in mind, here is a definitive list of the best names Belichick has gotten from the Madden name creator:

5. Josh Moore

Josh Moore goes to a small-town high school in Ohio. He’s part of the basketball team, but he belongs on defensive line. He is purportedly a center, but he has no footwork, and he struggles to catch a dribble.

Moore averaged 26 points a game as a freshman, but once he hit JV and the other high schoolers caught up to him, he became a black hole offensively. Some say he peaked. He thinks he’s just getting started. Some are right.

4. Griffin Murphy

Griffin Murphy went to an Ivy League school, and his football knowledge reflects it. He once tried to sue a defensive coordinator who ran a new blitz against him. Although Griffin is now an NFL head coach, he still has not studied the film of that blitz.

Although there’s a lot of upside to a name like Griffin Murphy, heir to the Murphy half of the Johnston & Murphy shoe empire, his father is largely disappointed he went into football, calling it “a sport for the riff-raff.”

3. Hal Ophamer

The only name on this list that doesn’t sound like he pops his collar, Hal Ophamer is a writer. He’s sensitive, he cares about the world. But above all else, he appreciates the value of a good hybrid defense.

Ophamer is doing his best, but he’s a little out of his depth. He kept calling Richard Seymour “Rich” to try and connect with him. Seymour absolutely hated it. Today, Ophamer is back to coaching high school. Last year, they finished third in the state in Division III.

2. NE Coach

He’s beautiful. He’s simple. He’s the NE Coach.

NE Coach only knows football. He hasn’t a conversation with someone off the gridiron in 17 years. Once, someone asked him to pick up their groceries. He ignored them and made them do up-downs until they had the motivation to do it themselves.

NE Coach is the reason Tom Brady left New England. Brady was sick of his competitive spirit being dwarfed. NE Coach drafted Mac Jones just to prove he could turn someone whose nickname is short for McCorkle into the next Tom Brady.

1. Chad Masters

Chad Masters is one of the NFL’s few players coaches. He backed up Tom Brady for seven years before his abrupt retirement, which no one noticed or took note of.

Masters shouldn’t even be in the football world. He only joined the college team to pay off his fraternity dues after his father was arrested for embezzlement. But he held such a damn fine clipboard the Patriots just couldn’t pass on him in the 2007 draft.

Teams inquired about Masters, but time and time again the Patriots said he wasn’t available. One team offered Chase Daniel for him straight up, but the Patriots turned him down. Eventually, some teammates started replacing his first name with “The.” Chad joined the NFLCA the second he got the opportunity.
