Why Is Brock Nelson Wearing A Mask

COLUMBUS, Ohio — After the Islanders saw the season flash before their eyes, this was the news they wanted and needed with 10 games left to secure a playoff spot: Brock Nelson, on the ice for practice Thursday morning at Northwell Health Ice Center.

His status for Friday against the Blue Jackets? Looks good, barring a last-minute snafu.

The only aftereffect from Noel Acciari’s hit in the corner on Tuesday, which sent the Islanders’ leading scorer down in a heap and then to the locker room, where he finished the game? A few stitches.

“It’s nice. Nice to get out there,” Nelson told reporters. “Felt better [Wednesday] and felt better again [Thursday], this morning. Just wanted to get out there and keep going. Right now I feel pretty good and hopefully be able to play.”

So instead of trying to navigate a pivotal stretch without both Nelson and Mathew Barzal — who has yet to skate, though the word “hopeful” is being tossed around with optimistic verve — the Islanders will not need to make additional accommodations on their injured list.

“Very good,” coach Lane Lambert said. “He seems like he’s OK so that’s good.”

It turned out that Nelson might have even returned to Tuesday’s 7-2 win over Toronto, if not for the Islanders wanting to be cautious.

Speaking in absolutes about head injuries is a dangerous game, but this seems to be a successful avoidance of something serious. So there will be no emergency reshuffling of the lines, no worries about when Nelson will return and nothing new to keep the coaching staff up at night.

“That was, just really the end of it,” Lambert said.

A story the Islanders are glad was short.

There was no update on Sebastian Aho, who did not participate in practice Thursday.

The Blue Jackets will have center Sean Kuraly (oblique) back in their lineup on Friday as well as coach Brad Larsen behind the bench. He was away from the team for personal reasons.

Goaltender Elvis Merzlikins also returned to the team after spending time in Latvia for a family funeral.

Center Cole Sillinger was loaned to AHL Cleveland to help with a playoff push for the minor league squad.
