Why Is Creed 3 Rated Pg 13

Wondering if Creed III is ok for kids? This spoiler-free Creed 3 parents guide will help you decide if Creed III is something you want to bring your whole family to see, or maybe see it solo or for a date night.

If you’re a Creed or Michael B. Jordan fan, you’ve likely been awaiting the arrival of Creed III in theaters. If you are a Sylvester Stallone, or an OG Rocky fan, you might be less enthused. Either way, Creed III is expected to pack a punch at the boxoffice. I was able to screen the movie so I could bring you a spoiler-free review to help you decide if it’s ok for your family. Here’s what you need to know.

Parents need to know that Creed III is a dramatic sequel in the Creed trilogy. The storyline departs from Rocky being a central part and focuses entirely on Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), now years later, retired, in a promoter role, and in full-on dad mode. The opponent in this film, named Damian (Jonathan Majors) comes from Creed’s past, and while he certainly has his faults, it’s hard not to empathize with him and his motivations. Adonis has to face his demons both past and present to move forward.

As you’d expect, the movie includes lots of hand to hand combat, blood, some fighting outside of the ring as well as fighting dirty. There seems to be more dialogue in this movie, both speaking, and signing. There is a little bit of swearing, one scene with a lot of (peck) kissing and a sexual innuendo. There’s also some scenes where a gun is seen and aimed and it touches on some triggering topics such as child abuse and abandonment.

What I loved

Creed III feels different than any other Creed or Rocky movie and that’s saying a lot since there’ve been so many. Jonathan Majors is phenomenal in his role and watching his character Damian progress through the movie is often more exciting than watching Adonis himself. I also found the relationship between Adonis, Bianca (Tessa Thomson) and their daughter Amara (Mila Davis-Kent) to be endearing. I enjoyed every moment they were on screen together. Davis-Kent is a young deaf actress and really shines on the big screen. I can’t wait to see where she goes next. Hopefully we’ll see her in future Creed movies.

What I didn’t love

You figure out where the plot is going early on, yet it still takes awhile to discover the root of the issues. I think this was an attempt to leave an element of suspense, so we can make our own assumptions and to build curiosity. But I found it to be a little frustrating and almost a bit of a letdown when things were finally revealed.

Maybe I’m biased, but I could have used even more of a storyline with Amara and Adonis and Bianca’s storyline with music producing. We did get to see them together quite a bit, but there were some parts of the plot that felt left open, perhaps intentional, to address in another sequel.

Finally, I’m not really a Rocky fan myself but I’ve seen all of the movies and the way he just wasn’t there at times felt awkward. Almost as if it was a “he who shall not be named” situation. Especially when familiar Rocky scores started to play. Nevertheless, he wasn’t needed in this story, but a casual mention might have made me feel a little more at ease.

Is Creed III Safe for kids?

If your kids have seen the other Creed movies, Creed III is mostly on par with those boxing wise, perhaps even a little bit more tame when it comes to sexual content. Where there were serious topics of cancer and vengeance in previous movies, this one deals with complex issues of guilt, and past trauma. There’s also more violence “outside of the ring” in scenes involving fights and guns being drawn.

Creed III is rated PG-13 for intense sports action, violence and some strong language.

Do I recommend it?

Overall I really enjoyed the movie. It had me laughing several times, clenching my seat and covering my eyes (I don’t do well with boxing). I personally didn’t like it as much as the first two movies-Especially the second which had me bawling my eyes out. But it’s still subtly moving in its own way. I love a good training montage and this one is ok, but probably nowhere near the top 3 (although the eye candy rating is definitely up there). I have more thoughts but don’t want to spoil anything. My husband and I plan to take our older two Rocky/Creed loving kids to see it opening weekend. Maybe we’ll come back to discuss this again once it’s out and I’ll update with my kids’ reviews.
