No matter where you live, you have a general idea of where both the high- and low-crime areas are located – which cities are the safest and which are among the “most dangerous.”

But if you are a Volusia County resident who also calls Daytona Beach home, has it ever crossed your mind that you were living the “most dangerous city” in Florida?
At least that’s the conclusion of a study conducted by personal injury attorneys at The Schiller and Kessler Group, a law firm with offices statewide.
The firm used data from the FBI between 2015 and 2019 “to determine which of Florida’s 65 most populous cities are statistically the most dangerous to live in.”

But what criteria did they use? And how do other cities compare to Daytona’s numbers?

The firm’s research used the data to determine which cities had the highest rate of violent crimes per 100,000 people.
These violent crimes include “murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.”
The total average of violent crimes in Daytona Beach added up to 1,229.9, placing it at the top. The next nine cities were:
- Homestead: 1,088.8.
- Miami Beach: 980.5.
- Fort Myers: 893.5.
- West Palm Beach: 854.3.
- Lauderhill: 833.7.
- Pompano Beach: 832.2.
- Tallahassee: 830.3.
- Orlando: 811.5.
- Melbourne: 793.5.
The figure that puts Daytona Beach at the top spot, even though its approximately 67,000 population (tens of thousands less than Orlando and Tallahassee, for example), is aggravated assault.
The Volusia city had an average of 1,016.3, over 400 points more than the second-place city, Homestead, with 608.7.

Daytona’s murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, rape and robbery numbers are similar to or, for the most part, lower than other cities’, according to the data.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young pointed out some problems with the study, like the age of the data and the fact that the population of Daytona Beach surges which skews the results.
“When you consider the amount of people who live in surrounding cities but work or go to school in Daytona Beach every day and when you consider the events that draw hundreds of thousands of people to the city every year, our population is much higher,” he said.
And if the population is undercounted, the crime rate per 100,000 people is higher.
What are the ‘safest’ cities in the list?
If Daytona Beach’s violent crime rate is among the highest in the state, neighboring city Port Orange figured among the list’s “safest.”
With its total average of violent crimes at 65.3, the city south of Daytona Beach was second on the list, only behind Weston with 49.8.
The other eight cities in the list were:
- Doral: 122.0.
- Cape Coral: 125.5.
- Port St. Lucie: 130.8.
- Palm Beach Gardens: 132.8.
- Coconut Creek: 133.0.
- Coral Gables: 133.1.
- Wellington: 149.0.
- North Port: 156.4.
Port Orange’s position in the list is largely due to its 1.6 rape average, lower than the other cities’ 17.9 average.
Weston’s 0.6 murder and nonnegligent manslaughter and 25.9 aggravated assault numbers gave it the edge over the Volusia County city.
