May 15 marks the start of Mental Health Awareness Week 2023 around the globe. This year, we have a Wear It Green Day to acknowledge awareness. We explore what that is, as well as the theme for this year.
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Whether you’re under stress from university and exam season or worried about jobs and money, it can affect us all at any moment. Though we should always be spreading awareness about its importance, this week, in particular, is used to recognise the significance of its impact, especially Wear It Green Day.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2023 Is Here
Beginning in 2001, Mental Health Awareness Week is the work of the Mental Health Awareness Foundation in the UK. Running each year since, it attempts to challenge stigma and give knowledge about mental health to everyone.

Though it started in the UK, it’s now spread across the globe and has a different theme each year. For 2023, the Mental health Awareness theme is anxiety. Throughout the next few days, the charity and more will be sharing stories and resources about the illness. One of their main goals is to help prevent anxiety from becoming a problem that can be really debilitating.

The week gets into all areas of the UK, including workplaces, schools and even just homes to spread as much awareness as possible.
Anxiety was chosen as the theme for this year largely because of financial worries concerning the cost-of-living crisis. Though worry is a natural response, the charity doesn’t want people to become so overwhelmed that it negatively affects lives.
Everyone is encouraged to get involved in a way that’s comfortable to them. Whether that’s sharing their story, or simply using the ToHelpMyAnxiety hashtag to join in the conversation and spread awareness.
Wear It Green Day is part of Mental Health Awareness Week and raises money to improve support for all.

The Mental Health Awareness Foundation has provided resources so that you can hold your own event. This could be at school, work or in your community. You can hold a quiz, do a bake sale or whatever combines your interest with raising money for a great cause.
There are plenty of packs available for whatever you want to do through the foundation, so it’s very easy to get involved.
1 in 6 of us are affected by mental health issues each week, so it’s a huge problem that will be affecting someone you know, if not yourself.
This Thursday, wear a bit of green to show your support and get involved with something bigger if you can. If Thursday isn’t a great day for you, then you have you Wear It Green Day on whatever day suits you, just as long you’re spreading awareness.
