Why Is Gas Bill So High

If your gas bill is higher than you expected, there’s a number of reasons why this may be. We’ll walk you through the various reasons here, but remember—we’re always here to help. Give us a call at 1-888-224-2710.

Rate changes

It’s possible that natural gas rates have changed, affecting the amount on your bill. We review the price of natural gas with the British Columbia Utilities Commission every three months. The good news is we purchase natural gas on your behalf and pass the cost on without markup.

Increased gas use

If you’ve used more gas than usual in your home or business, it will cause your bill to go up. Here are some reasons why we use more energy.

Colder temperatures

When colder weather sets in, we usually turn up the thermostat and run our furnace, boiler or fireplaces for longer periods. This means we use more gas.

Older appliances

Older gas appliances are not the same as today’s high-efficiency models. For instance, if you have a furnace or boiler that’s more than 15 years old and hasn’t been maintained and serviced regularly, chances are it’s near the end of its life cycle—and certainly not using gas efficiently.

Additional appliances

Increased gas use can also happen if you heat a pool or hot tub with gas, or have added new appliances to your home or business.

Poor insulation

Older homes or buildings are usually less able to keep the heat in. Poor insulation in basements and crawl spaces, or improper window and door seals, make heating costly.

Not servicing heating equipment

Just like your car, your gas heating equipment needs regular tune-ups. Without regular cleaning and maintenance, it may become inefficient in its use of gas. Having it regularly serviced by a licensed gas contractor will keep it safe and operating at its best.

Guests

Guests staying over or more people living in your home can lead to the increased use of gas since more people equals more hot water to take showers or do laundry.

We’re here to help

Did you know we work with our customers to help solve high bill problems year-round, not just in the winter months? If your bill is high, we’ll work with you to find a solution that may include payment arrangements. For example, we offer an Equal Payment Plan if you want to pay a fixed monthly payment and avoid those seasonal highs and lows.
