New eastbound I-40 detour route for Seligman area drivers begins July 13 as work continues on bridge project west of Seligman

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises Seligman area drivers to plan for additional travel time to access eastbound Interstate 40 when a new temporary detour goes into effect at 8 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, through fall.

New temporary detour from northbound Anvil Rock Road to eastbound I-40:

• Drivers will first travel westbound on I-40 and then follow the detour signs to the Jolly Road exit (Exit 103) to cross over I-40 and proceed eastbound on I-40. This is approximately a 12-mile detour.

The temporary detour from southbound Anvil Rock Road to westbound I-40 remains the same:

• Drivers will first travel eastbound on I-40 and then follow detour signs to cross over I-40 on a paved section of temporary road to proceed westbound on I-40. This is approximately a 1-mile detour.

The detours are needed while construction continues on the Anvil Rock Road Bridge rehabilitation project over I-40.

Motorists should also plan for the following ongoing travel restrictions that are currently in place:

• East- and westbound I-40 reduced to one lane in each direction under the Anvil Rock Road Bridge throughout the duration of the construction project.
  • An 18-foot width restriction through the work zone.
  • The speed limit is reduced in the work zone.
• During the bridge deck demolition, deck pouring and bridge barrier pouring operations, there will be times when full closures of I-40 will be necessary. To minimize traffic disruptions, the full closures will occur overnight, and traffic will be detoured around the work zone.

The $2.7 million project, expected to be completed this fall, includes the removal and replacement of the existing bridge deck, which is the top surface of the bridge that motorists drive on, as well as the approach slabs, guardrail and pavement markings.

The westbound closures on I-40, approximately 11 miles west of Seligman, will occur overnight from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning Monday night, June 27, and ending Wednesday morning, June 29.

• Motorists will use the Anvil Rock Road off- and on-ramps to exit and re-enter the interstate.
• The speed limit will be reduced in the work zone.

The full closure of I-40, approximately 11 miles west of Seligman, will occur overnight from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning Wednesday night, June 15, and ending Friday morning, June 17.

• East- and westbound I-40 will be closed in each direction at Anvil Rock Road to allow for the demolition of the Anvil Rock Bridge over I-40.
• Motorists will use the Anvil Rock Road off- and on-ramps to exit and re-enter the interstate. The speed limit will be reduced in the work zone.

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for ongoing traffic restrictions when the Anvil Rock Road Bridge construction project over Interstate 40 begins Monday, May 9. The bridge is located west of Seligman (milepost 109) in Yavapai County.

Motorists should expect the following travel restrictions through fall 2022:

• East- and westbound I-40 will be reduced to one lane in each direction under the Anvil Rock Road Bridge throughout the duration of the construction project.
  • An 18-foot width restriction will also be in place.
  • The speed limit will be reduced in the work zone.
• During the bridge deck demolition, deck pouring and bridge barrier pouring operations, there will be times when full closures of I-40 will be necessary. To minimize traffic disruptions, the full closures will occur overnight, and traffic will be detoured around the work zone.

Detour signs will be clearly posted when the detour is in place.

• Detour from north Anvil Rock Road to eastbound I-40: Drivers will first travel westbound on Interstate 40 and then follow detour signs to cross over I-40 on a paved section of temporary road to proceed eastbound on I-40. This is approximately a 1-mile detour.
