UPDATED: WFTV-Channel 9 anchor Vanessa Welch is leaving the ABC affiliate after nearly nine years to take an anchoring job at WFXT, the Fox affiliate in Boston. Both stations are owned by Cox Media Group.
“This is huge opportunity to anchor the 5, 6 10 and 11 p.m. newscasts in a Top 10 market,” Welch said Monday. (Orlando is the nation’s No. 19 market, and Boston is No. 7.)

“These jobs don’t come up very often, and I am humbled and honored to join Fox 25,” Welch said. “I’m thrilled to be staying with Cox, a company that has been so good to me over the years.”
She returned to WFTV from maternity leave on Monday to anchor the 5 p.m. newscast. Her final day at the station will be Friday. She starts in Boston on Dec. 1. (Starting next week, Martha Sugalski will anchor with Bob Opsahl at 5 p.m., WFTV said.)

Welch’s departure means that her husband, WESH-Channel 2 meteorologist Jason Brewer, also is leaving Central Florida. Brewer said he planned to work at the NBC affiliate through the holidays and was exploring all options for work.
“I am so proud of my wife,” Brewer said. “When she told one of her mentors she was marrying me, he told her, ‘Jason better get ready for an adventure!’ We will miss our Central Florida community dearly, but I am excited for this next chapter.”
Welch added: “Jason is extremely talented, and I know there is a huge future for him in Boston.”
She started her journalism career in West Texas, where she met Brewer. She next worked in Raleigh-Durham, N.C.

In announcing Welch’s hiring, WFXT highlighted her Orlando reporting. The Boston station said Welch uncovered problems with Florida’s toll payment, broke stories about abuse in food stamp and unemployment programs and helped a single mother gain Medicaid coverage for lifesaving surgery.
“Leaving Orlando is bittersweet,” Welch said. “We have made some incredible friends here who have become our family. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve on several boards here and support many local charities.”
Welch volunteers with the Pediatric Cancer Foundation and local hospitals that treat children with cancer. She has hosted an annual 5K Run at SeaWorld to raise money for Pediatric Cancer Research. She is also a board member for Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
The couple has three sons: Wilson, born in November 2011; Benton, born in May 2013; and Witt McCain, born in August.
“Orlando will always have a special place in our hearts,” Welch said. “All three of our boys were born here, and we made lifelong friends in this town.”
