One of the things that fans of the Naruto series were able to notice during the early to later portions of the storyline was that Hatake Kakashi was always late to meetings and training. This became a running gag throughout the entire storyline as it appeared that Kakashi wasn’t someone that took things seriously due to his somewhat easygoing demeanor. So, why was Kakashi always late to almost everything in the Naruto storyline?
The truth about Kakashi’s constant tardiness was connected to the death of his friends and former teammates Obito and Rin. Because of what Obito and Rin meant to Kakashi, he always made sure to visit them every day before he went to meetings and training. As such, he was always late due to this gesture.

While it was amazing to see that Kakashi’s lateness was due to the fact that he visited Obito’s supposed grave, it was also surprising to see just how shocked he was when he found out that the friend he thought had been dead for decades was still alive the entire time and was working closely with the enemy. In that regard, let’s look into Kakashi’s tardiness and the true reason behind it.
Kakashi’s Tardiness Was A Running Gag
Ever since the start of the Naruto anime, Hatake Kakashi has been one of the most popular and most important characters of the series due to what he meant to Naruto and the other members of Team 7. Of course, as the sensei of Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, he was almost always in the middle of things that involved his pupils. But while it may be true that he was responsible for the well-being of his pupils, the thing is that he was always late to almost every event he needed to attend.
In fact, Kakashi was actually late for the first meeting he had with Team 7. He was always portrayed as a laidback character that took things lightly. In that regard, the man called the Copy Ninja was seen by some people as an irresponsible person that never took things seriously except when he needed to. That was the reason why he was often late to meetings and training.

Kakashi’s constant tardiness seemed to be a part of his personality during the early part of Naruto, as most people simply thought that he was always tardy because he was lazy and irresponsible. His tardiness was also one of the things that constantly drew Naruto’s ire.
Of course, whenever he tried explaining his tardiness, Kakashi always said absurd excuses like getting lost or forgetting to set his alarm. And most people thought that he was often late because he spent a lot of time reading Jiraiya’s book.
Nevertheless, the thing about Kakashi was that he was always a secretive person that hardly opened up to people, no matter how close he had become with them. And while his tardiness was a running gag, there was a deeper meaning behind it.
Why Was Kakashi Always Late?
Back when he was still young, Kakashi worked in a team under Naruto’s father Minato Namikaze’s team. This team was composed of Kakashi, Obito Uchiha, and Rin Nohara. Of course, due to the fact Rin was in love with Kakashi and that Obito loved Rin, Kakashi became Obito’s rival while they were working on the same team. Their dynamic was similar to the dynamic between Naruto and Sasuke.
However, during one of their missions, the trio was involved in an incident that didn’t include their sensei, who was one of the strongest ninjas at that time. As such, Kakashi had to lead his team but ended up in a tough situation where Obito needed to sacrifice himself when he saw that Kakashi was about to get crushed by a boulder.
Half of Obito’s body was crushed by the boulder as he gave his recently-awakened Sharingan to Kakashi so that he could rescue Rin. So, while Kakashi and Rin supposedly survived that mission, they thought that Obito had died.

Years later, Kakashi and Rin were involved in a mission related to the Three-Tails. Rin was forced to become the Three Tails’ Jinchuriki during that mission. However, she took her own life by placing herself in front of Kakashi’s Chidori as she thought that doing so was the only way to save Kakashi and make sure that she wouldn’t be a liability to Konoha’s safety.
In that regard, both of Kakashi’s teammates died when they were still young. As such, Kakashi always made sure to stop by their graves and spend some time with his fallen friends before he went out for missions, meetings, and training. He was moved by Obito’s words, which said:
“In the world, those who break rules are scum. But those who abandon their friends are worse than scum.”
As such, Kakashi made sure that he never abandoned the memory of his friends by visiting their graves as often as he could. That is why he was always late by a few minutes, as he needed to spend time with his fallen friends. This means that his tardiness was never a product of his laidback nature but was simply due to the fact that he was someone who actually valued his comrades and friends. And it was Obito who helped develop this side of Kakashi when he saw just how selfless his friend was.
Nevertheless, we do know that Obito was alive the entire time because he was actually the masked man named Tobi, who worked alongside the members of the Akatsuki and was the protégé of Madara. Obito, of course, was one of the central antagonists for the Fourth Ninja Great War.
Of course, Kakashi was both surprised and relieved to see that his friend was still alive. But they were on opposing sides during the Great War as Obito’s past experiences turned him into an angry man that only wanted to reshape the world according to his will. Nevertheless, he and Kakashi reconciled at the last moment, as Obito gave his life once more to make sure that Naruto and the others would be able to save the world.
