This year, the average ACT score for incoming students at Miami University was 27.5, a significant increase from the previous year. However, the university has set an ambitious goal to raise the average score to 30 within the next six years. This level of achievement is reached by only 5 percent of test-takers nationwide.

The challenge lies in the cost of attracting these high-ability students. Miami University would need to offer new scholarships to entice them away from competing schools such as Michigan, Ohio State, and Denison. This task becomes even more daunting as the university is currently cutting millions from its budget.

Michael Kabbaz, associate vice president of enrollment management, acknowledges the uphill battle, stating, “We are competing against a different set of schools with every move forward. The university has faced considerable budget cuts over the past four years, amounting to $50 million. Despite these financial constraints, Miami University aims to strike a balance between affordability and excellence.

Another approach to attracting top students involves increasing private donations for scholarships and recruiting more out-of-state students. Currently, out-of-state students make up nearly 40 percent of the freshman class, and this number continues to rise. Although these students pay higher tuition fees, they may displace Ohio students with lower scores.

The governing trustees of Miami University have made it clear that increasing the number of out-of-state students is a key part of their strategy. Michael Armstrong, a Miami Trustee, highlights the importance of this approach, stating, “It’s not only a question of academics, it’s a question of revenue. If we don’t get this number up, we’ve got a financial problem.”
