A glitch on Facebook which saw friend requests automatically sent to every profile a user had viewed has now been fixed, Meta has confirmed.

The glitch – which left users exposed for “Facebook stalking” other profiles – was described as “awkward” and “embarrassing” by some users – and many took to social media to highlight the issue.

Why was Facebook adding friend requests automatically?

The bug, which was related to a recent app update, meant that any profile viewed by a user on Facebook would automatically be sent a friend request – catching out anyone who had been hoping to snoop on another profile undetected.

According to social media, the glitch had some embarrassing consequences. One user wrote: “If you check someone’s Facebook that you’re not friends with, it automatically sends a friend request for you. It’s true because I’m now friends with my ex-husband’s wife’.”

Another wrote: “Is anyone else’s facebook sending automatic friend request when they click on a profile? It was the wrong night to go through my year book & stalk.”

But others were given an unexpected boost, with aone person commenting: “Got a friend request from an ex – thanks Facebook for letting me know they are still obsessed with me.”

Some said they had ended up sending friend requests to people they had been attempting to block.

And several people on social media claimed to have deactivated their Facebook accounts as a result of the issue.

What did Facebook say?

Meta, the company that owns Facebook, confirmed the issue had been resolved.

In a statement to news outlet The Daily Beast, a spokesperson for Meta said: “We fixed a bug related to a recent app update that caused some Facebook friend requests to be sent mistakenly.

“We’ve stopped this from happening and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

According to some users, the unwanted friend requests have since disappeared. However those who want to check whether they have been affected should visit facebook.com/friends to review their pending requests.

From there, any requests users did not make themselves can be cancelled.

Facebook verification on the way

The glitch occured as Meta began rolling out a paid verification service – similar to that introduced on Twitter – in the UK. It means that Facebook and Instagram users will be able to get a blue tick from £9.99 per month.

The new service, which will be available to users over the age of 18 who can show an official ID, will be rolled out across the UK in the coming weeks.

According to Meta, verified users will be given more protection from impersonation, in part because their accounts will be monitored to check for fakers.
