1. Clean the Microphone
You can start by inspecting and cleaning the microphones on your iPhone. Note that they’d be placed at different locations depending on the iPhone model.
Apart from the usual microphones at the bottom, you can find one on the front above the earpiece and another on the back next to the camera. Use a soft-bristled brush or a microfiber cloth to clean microphones. While you are at it, remove any case or screen protector.

2. Unplug All the Accessories and Turn Off the Bluetooth
It’s possible that one of the external accessories connected to your iPhone is causing problems with the microphone. To avoid any interference, consider disconnecting all wired accessories. Additionally, turn off Bluetooth to prevent accidental connections to your wireless headphones.
Open the Settings app, tap on Bluetooth, and turn off the toggle next to Bluetooth in the following menu.

3. Test the Microphone
Next, you should test the microphones on your iPhone to rule out any hardware-related issues.
To test the primary microphone (the one located at the bottom) on your iPhone, you can use the Voice Memo app. Record a small clip and play it to see if the primary microphone works fine.

4. Allow Apps to Use Microphone
If the microphone not working issue is limited to specific apps, ensure that those apps have permission to access your iPhone’s microphone. Here’s how to check.
Step 1: Open the Settings app and tap on Privacy & Security.
Step 2: Tap on Microphone and use the toggles in the following menu to enable microphone access for your favorite apps.

5. Close Background Apps Using Your Microphone
Another reason why the microphone won’t work in a specific app is if another app is already using it in the background. To avoid this, close any apps running in the background. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen or press the Home Screen button twice to access the app switcher. Then, swipe up on the apps to close them.
6. Restart or Update the Problematic App
At times, temporary glitches with an app can cause the microphone to stop working. Most of the time, you can fix such issues by restarting the app. However, if that doesn’t help, the app may be buggy or outdated. In that case, try updating the problematic app from the App Store to see if that solves the issue.
7. Disable Noise Cancellation
Noise cancellation is a feature on the iPhone that reduces ambient noise when holding the receiver to your ear. Sometimes, this feature can get finicky and lead to microphone issues. You can try disabling this feature to see if that helps.
Note: iPhone 13 and newer models do not support the noise cancellation feature.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone and navigate to Accessibility.

8. Install iOS Updates
There’s a chance that the microphone not working issue on your iPhone is related to a bug. If that’s the case, installing pending software updates should help. To do so, open the Settings app and tap on General. Tap on Software Update to download and install pending updates.

9. Reset Your iPhone
Lastly, if nothing works, you can consider resetting your iPhone as a last resort. This will revert all the settings on your iPhone to their defaults. Don’t worry, your personal data won’t be affected by this.
Step 1: Open the Settings app, tap on General, and select Transfer or Reset iPhone.
