Why Is My Roku Remote Blinking And Not Working

Roku is one of the top pieces of streaming hardware you can purchase on today’s market. It allows you to drop your expensive cable plan and stream anything from Netflix to Hulu, HBO to Amazon TV, all in one place.

Every Roku device comes with its own Roku remote. More often than not, your remote will work fine, but some people have noticed a common issue with a select number of Roku remotes: a perpetually flashing green light.

Usually, when your Roku remote flashes green, it just means it’s in pairing mode. But if it won’t stop flashing, the remote will never pair to your TV, and that’s when you have a problem.

To fix this, we’re looking at a handful of possible quick and easy troubleshooting solutions involving your Roku remote, Roku player, WiFi network, and finally, the Roku mobile app.

Note: Before you attempt anything else, try replacing the batteries on your Roku remote with new ones, especially if it’s been a while since you last changed them. This is a very common and quick fix!

Fix #1: Change Your Roku Remote’s Batteries

Batteries on the tail-end of their life tend to make electronics act out in weird ways: delaying button inputs, refusing to perform a specific task or function, or simply making the device stop working altogether. Thankfully, the fix is about as easy as it gets.

  • Take your remote and open up the battery compartment.
  • Replace your remote with its designated battery type (either AA or AAA).
  • Try pairing your remote to your Roku device now.
  • If this doesn’t work, repeat the “Reset Your Roku Remote” solution above.

If, after you’ve changed the batteries to your remote and performed a remote reset, your remote still flashes that green light, it’s time to power cycle your Roku player.

Fix #2: Power Cycle Your Roku Player

Like your TV, your Roku player can occasionally face data overload. Power cycling your Roku player would rid your system of these overloads and let you easily connect your Roku remote.

  • Unplug the Roku player
  • Remove the batteries from your Roku remote
  • Plug the Roku player back in
  • Once you see the Roku logo pop up, re-insert your Roku remote’s batteries.
  • If the remote pairing screen doesn’t come up automatically, press and hold the remote’s pairing button for 3 seconds.

If you’re still facing issues, you need to try resetting your Roku remote.

Fix #3: Reset Your Roku Remote

If power cycling your Roku streaming device didn’t work, and your Roku remote is still flashing green, the issue may lie within the Roku remote itself.

Your Roku remote’s software might have a data overload, which is probably why it’s malfunctioning. To fix this, like your Roku device, you’re going to reset the remote itself.

  • Remove the batteries from your remote.
  • Unplug the power from your Roku player, wait for 5 to 10 seconds, and then plug it back in.
  • Once you see the Roku home screen on your TV, load the batteries back into your remote
  • Underneath the battery insert, there should be a tiny circular button. That is the reset button. Press and hold it for 5 seconds.
  • That flashing green light should come on, and the remote should go into pairing mode. This process could take up to 30 seconds, so patience is key. You’ll know it’s finished pairing when a notification appears on the screen, saying it’s complete.

Fix #4: Hard Reset Your Roku Device

Sometimes your Roku device itself can have a data overload that can trigger a domino effect, causing your external devices (like our TV, gaming systems, cable boxes, etc.) to have issues.

So, you need to perform a hard reset on your Roku device.

To do this:

  • Remove all cables except the Power cord.
  • Press and hold the “Reset” button on the back or bottom of the device for about 20 seconds. Some models will require a paper clip to press the button.
  • Continue to hold the “Reset” button, then remove the Power cord from the back of the unit.
  • Release the “Reset” button, then plug all of the cords back into the device.

Hopefully, now that your Roku device has off-loaded some potential data buildup, your remote should successfully pair.

Fix #5: Reboot Your WiFi Router

Even your WiFi router might be the one to blame for your Roku remote’s malfunctioning. If there is an interruption between your network and your Roku device, the remote pairing process could easily become an issue.

So, you’ll need to soft reset your WiFi router.

  • Track down your WiFi router
  • Figure out where it’s plugged in
  • Unplug your router from the wall
  • Wait 30 seconds and plug it back in
  • Wait an additional 1-2 minutes for all of your devices to reconnect
  • Once your Roku device has reconnected, try pairing your Roku remote

The remote pairing screen will hopefully pop up and give you a pairing confirmation message.

Fix #6: Get the Roku Mobile App

If nothing else has worked so far, download the Roku mobile app for your phone or tablet. This app will allow you to operate your Roku device until you get your hands on a new Roku remote.

You can also try pairing your remote through the app:

  • Log in to the app using your phone
  • Go to SETTINGS
  • Click on REMOTE
  • Tap on PAIR REMOTE

From there, follow the instructions on your screen to complete the process.

You can also use the mobile app to navigate the on-screen Roku menu and hard reset your Roku device this way: Home -> Settings -> System -> Advanced System Settings -> Factory Reset (if you’re prompted for a password, it’s usually 0000 or 1234).

The mobile app is fairly feature-packed and even allows you to listen to your Roku audio discretely over Bluetooth.

At the end of the day…

If your remote just won’t seem to pair your device, it may be time to purchase a new one, or at the very least, see if Roku can send you a replacement.

You can easily get a new remote for your Roku streaming device for fairly cheap on Amazon. This one is the cheapest official replacement remote made by Roku. But, there are even more feature-packed options.
