How to Fix a Swiffer WetJet That Isn’t Spraying.
There are a few possible causes for a Swiffer not spraying. You may have already attempted some of the following, but here are some steps to take to fix your Swiffer:
Step 1: Check That The Cleaning Bottle Is Properly Inserted.
First, start by removing the solution bottle and reinserting it. When inserting the bottle, you should be able to hear the bottle click into place.
For the Swiffer to work, the bottle must be situated properly in place; otherwise, it will not spray out the liquid.
Step 2. Check and Replace the Batteries.

The Swiffer motor runs on 4 x AA batteries and will not spray without them. So if it has been a while since you changed the batteries, do so now.
If the Swiffer begins spraying again, then that is great news! It’s a cheap, quick, and easy fix.
However, if you have changed the batteries and still do not hear the motor running, the pump motor may be clogged, rusty and needs to be lubricated. In this case, move on to step 3.
If you have changed the batteries and hear the motor running but no liquid is coming out, move on to step 2.
Step 3. Clean the Nozzle.
If you have put fresh batteries in the Swiffer and can hear the motor running, but nothing is spraying out, the spray nozzles may be clogged.
The quickest and easiest way to do this without disassembling the Swiffer is to do the following:
- Take the Swiffer outside, and stand it upright, leaning against something.
- Using a powerful hose, spray water at the nozzles. A hose with good water pressure will do a better job of unclogging the head.
- Make sure to direct the steam toward the opening of the spray nozzle. Do this for about 30 – 60 seconds.
- If you don’t have a hose, you could instead use a pin or toothpick to unpick the nozzle of the Swiffer. Gently puncture both spray nozzles, and scrape out any grime.
- Fill the Swiffer with water and test the mop; hopefully, it should spray again.
You might want to grab a refill of the Swiffer WetJet pads.
Step 4. Lubricate the Pump Motor.
The pump motor is probably clogged if the motor is silent when you press the spray button, even with fresh batteries. To fix this, the method is a little more complex and will require disassembling the mop.
What you will need:
- Flathead screwdriver.
- Dry lubricant.
Follow these steps to disassemble and lubricate the motor:
- Remove the cleaning solution bottle from the device.
- Remove the two screws on either side of the circle where the bottle usually sits.
- Unscrew the larger screw on the outside that holds the mop head to the handle.
- Separate the cover into two halves.
- Using a flathead screwdriver, turn the motor manually through the little window.
- Apply a dry lubricant inside the pump motor and all over the rusted terminal ends.
- Press the spray button- hopefully, the motor should run as it should and make a whirring sound. If so, reassemble the mop.
How to reassemble the Swiffer:
- Put the two pieces of plastic together, and secure them with a large screw.
- Screw the two screws onto either side of the bottle seating area.
- Install the cleaning solution bottle.
Step 5. Check the Battery Compartment.
If all the other steps have left you with a useful mop that doesn’t spray, there may be an issue with the battery compartment. Check to see if the battery connectors are rusty or have debris.
Or, perhaps the old batteries have leaked. Use acetone nail polish remover to remove any battery leakage, and wipe down the area.
