Why Is T/gel Out Of Stock

If you have looked to buy any of Neutrogena’s T/Gel Shampoo products you probably have noticed a lack of supply on the shelves. You may still be able to pick them up online in reasonable quantities, but be aware the Neutrogena’s T/Gel Shampoos have been discontinued. This product line has been invaluable to many that suffer from psoriasis, eczema or dandruff, which worsens the blow. You may be wondering why Neutrogena would discontinue such a popular product and what alternatives are there. Read on to find out more information!

Why The T Gel Shampoos were Discontinued

To understand why Neutrogena discontinued their T/Gel Shampoo line, you will need to understand a bit of history with an ingredient called DMDM Hydantoin. I wrote about it in this article, Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo – DISCONTINUED. At that point, the original T/Gel Shampoo was just listed as out of stock on the Neutrogena website, but not noted as discontinued. However, we can see now that the Shampoo has been, along with the entire T/Gel product line, discontinued.

You may think seeing the entire T/Gel shampoo being discontinued means there is an issue with the active ingredient (coal tar) of T/Gel; however, I do not believe that to be the case. Instead, the discontinuation appears to be linked to the product line containing DMDM Hydantoin and the controversy surrounding that. Read more about that here. Long story short, two people started a class action lawsuit in 2020 against Unilever regarding DMDM Hydantoin in their Tresemme line. Then in 2021, someone else filed a similar class action lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson (who owns the brand Neutrogena) regarding DMDM Hydantoin in their OGX products.

From the time of these lawsuits, there has been a lot of negative online discourse about products that contain DMDM Hydantoin, and Neutrogena subsequently removed the products. This means that Neutrogena discontinued all of the T/Gel products that contain DMDM Hydantoin. On the flip side, all the products that are available do not have DMDM Hydantoin.

Neutrogena T Gel vs T Sal Shampoos

Neutrogena had quite a number of products in their anti-dandruff line up. You will notice Neutrogena discontinued all the T/Gel products, while the T/Sal product remain available. Given it is the only product in stock for dandruff control, you may be tempted to purchase it. However, these products are not the same. So what is the difference between T/Sal and T/Gel? Moreover, what is the difference between all the different T/Gel products?

Is T Sal Shampoo a Replacement for T Gel?

Despite being in the same section on Neutrogena’s website of dandruff control, they are not suitable replacements for many people. That is due to their ingredient differences. All T/Gel products have Neutar as an active ingredient while T/Sal has Salicylic Acid as the main active ingredient. Both ingredients help with dandruff, but use different mechanisms.

  • T/Sal: The active ingredient is salicylic acid (3%), which helps dissolve dead skin cells. This is different from the T-gel products.
  • T/Gel: The active ingredient is coal tar (0.5% or 1% concentration levels), which helps reduce the production of skin cells.

Do You Know Which Neutrogena T Gel Shampoo You Are Using?

When looking for a replacement for the T/Gel Shampoo, it is important to know which T/Gel shampoo you actually were using. There are 3 main different T/Gel shampoos. All the shampoos have Neutar (coal tar) as a main ingredient. In case you didn’t know, Neutar is Neutrogena’s proprietary blend of solubilized coal tar extract. It is important to note, when you see Neutar and coal tar on an ingredient list, it is referring to one ingredient. For example, a 2% Neutar solution contains 0.5% coal tar.

T/Gel® Therapeutic Shampoo-Original Formula

  • Original Version
    • Active Ingredients: 2% Neutar (0.5% Coal Tar)
    • Inactive Ingredients: Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamide MEA, Laureth-4, Fragrance, Sodium Chloride, Polysorbate 20, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, DMDM Hydantoin, Citric Acid, Tetrasodium EDTA, Sodium Hydroxide

T/Gel® Therapeutic Shampoo-Stubborn Itch

  • Same active ingredients as the Original T/Gel, but it includes cooling menthol.
    • Active Ingredients: 2% Neutar (0.5% Coal Tar)
    • Inactive Ingredients: Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamide MEA, Laureth-4, Polysorbate 20, Fragrance, Polyquaternium-46, Propylene Glycol, Menthol, PEG-55 Propylene Glycol Oleate, Bis-PEG-18 Methyl Ether Dimethyl Silane, Linoleamidopropyl Pg-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate, Citric Acid, DMDM Hydantoin, Tetrasodium EDTA, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hydroxide

Alternatives to Neutrogena’s Discontinued T Gel Shampoo

When looking at alternatives for T/Gel shampoos, it is important to look at the active ingredient. Unfortunately, there is some level of proprietary differences when it comes to the solution given Neutrogena’s coal tar solution is patented. However, in general it is a coal tar extract. And as you can see with T/Sal, not all products targeted at dandruff or psoriasis contain coal tar. Thus, it is important to review the ingredients list.

Outside of the active ingredient, it is important to check out the reviews, cleansing agent and the actual T/Gel Shampoo you are attempting to replace to ensure it is a good fit.

DHS Tar Shampoo

The DHS Tar Shampoo is created by a company called Person and Covey, a company founded by a chemist. I am listing this as a top replacement for Neutrogena’s T-Gel Shampoo (all versions). The ingredients are limited (only 7 in the unscented version), and focused on key cleaning ingredients. There are some differences – the coal extract solution is 2.9% while Neutrogena’s is 2%. However, the actual coal tar content is equivalent to Neutrogena’s Original and Stubborn itch versions. Moreover, the main cleansing agent (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) is the same as Neutrogena’s T/Gel Shampoos.

The reviews state this to be an excellent alternative and in some cases even better than T/Gel. Given that, I am noting this as a possible replacement even for the Extra-Strength version. There is also a scented version for those that dislike the coal-tar scent. A con that came up a few times is that the product can arrive leaky.

  • Cleansing Agent: Sodium Laureth Sulfate
  • Coal Tar: 2.9% Coal Tar Solution (0.5% Coal Tar)
  • Replacements for: Neutrogena T/Gel Shampoo versions: Original, Stubborn Itch, & Extra-Strength

True+Real Therapeutic Tar Gel Anti-Dandruff Shampoo 1% Coal Tar, 6 Ounce

This product appears to be an equivalent replacement for the Extra-Strength version of T/Gel in terms of ingredients. Both have 1% coal tar in a 4% coal tar solution. The inactive ingredients are almost identical as well. Based on reviews, many people find it a suitable replacement.

Some cons are that reviewers note it to have a stronger scent than Neutrogena’s T/Gel and a leaky cap. Moreover, I could not find a website for this brand. It appears to just be a private label replacement that Tru+Real is selling due to Neutrogena discontinuing T/Gel Extra-Strength. Thus, while it appears to be suitable based on ingredients, I would be careful with this one, and would try the DHS Tar Shampoo first even though it has a lesser coal tar content.

  • Cleansing Agent: Sodium Laureth Sulfate
  • Coal Tar: 4% Coal Tar Extract (1% Coal Tar)
  • Replacements for: Neutrogena T/Gel Shampoo Extra-Strength

Pete & Pedro CONTROL Extra-Strength Dandruff & Anti-Itch Medicated Coal Tar Peppermint Tea Tree Oil Men’s & Women Shampoo

This coal-tar shampoo contains peppermint (menthol). Thus, this looks like a great replacement for Neutrogena’s T-Gel Stubborn Itch version. While that T/Gel version did not market the cooling essential oil, you can tell from the ingredient list and reviews that it contains menthol.

The 1.8% coal tar solution is similar to the 2% Neutar solution of the non Extra-Strength versions. I found the packaging to be confusing at first as there is a donkey on this product! However, this product is for human use. As for the reviews, the positives state that it works and the the scent actually is not bad. However, it is expensive on a per ounce basis. I should note as well Pete & Pedro branded this as a Men’s shampoo line. I do not see why you cannot use it as a woman, but it something else to keep in mind.

  • Cleansing Agent: Sodium Laureth Sulfate
  • Coal Tar: 1.8% Coal Tar Solution (Coal Tar content unlabeled)
  • Replacements for: Neutrogena T/Gel Shampoo Stubborn Itch

Major Thera-Gel Shampoo, 251mL (8.5 oz)

This shampoo is very similar to the original T/Gel version in terms of ingredients including the active ingredient and cleansing agent (Sodium Laureth Sulfate). The main difference is that reviewers noted this to have a much stronger scent than T/Gel. Overall, many people appear to find this shampoo when looking for a T/Gel replacement, so I wanted to include a review of it as an alternative. It appears to be a decent replacement that Major formulated as a generic version of the T/Gel original version.

  • Cleansing Agent: Sodium Laureth Sulfate
  • Coal Tar: 2.5% Coal Tar Solution (0.5% Coal Tar)
  • Replacements for: Neutrogena T/Gel Shampoo Original

Overall, there are a lot of options to replace the Neutrogena T/Gel Shampoos. It is still important to be careful when looking at replacements, but this guide should help you understand what you need. Have you tried any of these replacements? If so, what is working for you?
