Why Is Wheel Of Fortune Showing Reruns 2023

The milestone season is nearing an end, so here are the list of S40 Summer rerun weeks.

June 12-15: Wheel of Fortune XL Week I that aired September 12-15

During this week, there was no studio audience. A special opening sequence was used, featuring Roman numerals rapidly counting from one to ten, then twenty, then forty. This was followed by a montage of clips from throughout the week set to the music cue that typically opens traveling-themed weeks. To celebrate the show’s fortieth anniversary, an XL Wedge was added to Wheel. This wedge was placed on the $850 and played similarly to the MDW. Correct consonants called on it were worth the top dollar value per that round. If it was landed on, the “XL” glowed and the logo appeared on the contestant’s scoreboard. It offered an extra $40K in the BR if a contestant took it there and solves the Bonus Puzzle. It also remained on the Wheel for R4+. Because of the XL Wedge, the MDW moved to the $500 beside the $600 (w/ the full wedge side up), plus a second one was added to the $500 beside the $900 in R2 and the Prize wedge moved to the $500. Also, one of the MWs moved to the $500 next to $800. In addition, if the MDW was taken to the BR, two $1M envelopes would be present (replacing not only the $100K envelope, but also one of the $40K envelopes), and any wedges lost in R1 or R2 would be returned to the Wheel in the next round. Landing on one wedge while already carrying the other counted as a $1K wedge, as on Celebrity Wheel of Fortune. The show’s logo also had a blue-violet XL behind it, identical to what appeared on the XL Wedge. An additional $5K was given w/ each Prize Puzzle and as Jim announced this, the “XL” logo appeared onscreen. It is also the Vacay and $40K Giveaway. Home viewers were able to submit each day’s Prize Puzzle to the show’s website for a chance to win the trip offered by each day’s Prize Puzzle and $40K cash. Finally, the BR envelopes had the XL logo on the top flap.

On Monday, there ws a cold open featuring Pat and Vanna promoting the theme on the darkened set and Jim did not introduce Pat and Vanna, as they were already in their positions after the intro. Furthermore, our newest admin, @jliu23232, broke the streak of @andynwof recapping the season premieres.

The $1K Tossup was FORTY SEASONS ON TELEVISION! and a “null” cycle was cut out of R2, as evidenced by Pat saying “back to you” on Adriana Beals’ first aired turn. Robin Cayetano spun only once the entire game, calling a wrong letter on $600 in R2. Even so, she solves that round’s puzzle along w/ R3’s, the second of the Triple Tossups, and the Speed-Up.

I should also mention that this episode was pre-empted in most West Coast markets: on NBC affiliates by the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards and ABC affiliates by a national broadcast of Monday Night Football (the latter of which runs long as results in the show not airing in its entirety in some markets that schedule it after the game). Because of this, the show announced on social media that any input would be accepted for the Vacay and $40K Giveaway.

On Tuesday, the CC did not include the exclamation point in the $1K Tossup puzzle GO BIG OR GO HOME! when it was solved, going against the precedent of the captions always using punctuation exactly as the board does. And for the first time, SHOW BIZ had a decade other than THE 80’s attached (90’s SHOW BIZ, in Round 1).

Jen Wright was faced w/ this FOOD & DRINK Bonus Puzzle…

_ E L _ _ _ _ _ S T _ _ _ _

DCMA gave her…

D E L _ C _ _ _ S T A _ _ _

W/o the F’s…

…SHE BECAME THE FIRST $100K LOSER TO A BOX OF DELICIOUS TAFFY.

On Wednesday, Vanna wore a sleeveless top and pants.

During R3, when contestant Monique Nazario calls T, a C was accidentally shown in the “letter circle” and the Triple Tossups were categorized as THING instead of LIVING THING due to all of them being extinct animals.

Here’s the FUN & GAMES BR Ryan Zsiga was faced w/…

_ / R _ _ _ L _ L _ S _

He knew it already and said YFHA…

A / R _ Y A L F L _ S H

On Thursday, Valrie Brown solved the $2K Tossup CHEMICAL ENGINEER w/o buzzing in, but she was still awarded the solve (?!).

June 16: America’s Game III (Weekend Getaways) that aired January 30

The Friday episode of Wheel of Fortune XL I was replaced w/ this one (which I covered) due to the controversial EENIE MEENIE MINY MOE puzzle. In this replacement episode, too many duds were called in the Mystery Round including a CRITICAL ONE of K from Meg Clark, and in the next round, Mateena Hough PAINFULLY BANKRUPTed next to $650 to throw away $11,200 resulting in a $0 Prize Puzzle win. In the BR, Meg surprisingly DIDN’T GET BINGO NIGHT and let an easy $40K slip away. NO WAY this should’ve been lost.

June 19-23: Collette Week that aired January 16-20

During this week, the intro featured Pat and Vanna promoting the theme from an international locale, followed by travel footage set to the XL Week intro music. Home viewers could also submit each day’s Bonus Puzzle on the show’s website for a chance to win a Collette vacation.

@jpgenius covered the middle three episodes.

Here was the Speed-Up puzzle on Tuesday…

S _ R _ _ _ _ R R _ S _ _ R _ _ _ _ _

Carmon Pullen nailed STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE!

During the closing chat, clips of Dom Estrada from 1/18/2022 were shown of his trips to Bern, Zermatt, and the Matterhorn w/ his wife Tawny.

During Wednesday’s closing chat, clips of Ash Colwell from 8/3/2020 were shown of his trips to Edinburgh, Florence, Pisa, and Siena (the first city’s in Scotland) w/ his mother Jill.

On Thursday, while Kilimanjaro Sally solves the second Triple Tossup, he ended up spinning only once, calling a wrong letter on $900 and for no apparent reason, the audience applauded when a correct letter was called in the Speed-Up Round.

Preston Leslie was the big winner and was faced w/ this PHRASE BR…

_ _ S T _ / _ _ _ E

CDMA and B gave him…

B _ S T A / M _ _ E

He would BUST A MOVE because…

…HE BECAME THE FIRST $100K WINNER OF THE SEASON!!! His total in cash & merchandise was $126,450 — well done, sir! That win was for you, Jay Briscoe!

June 26-30: California Coast that aired September 19-23

During this week, the circular LED contestant backdrop was not used.

On Monday, Cynthia Joseph pulled a Robert Santoli the third Triple Tossup of SANTA CRUZ, R1 and R4 were played entirely by the contestants who began them, and Ashlee Martin solved the Speed-Up puzzle w/ no money.

The original R4 puzzle on Tuesday, DELAYED REACTION, was thrown out due to the “only vowels remain” beeps accidentally sounding despite the Y having not yet been revealed. This puzzle was later used on October 21.

Wednesday’s episode will be replaced by the April 11 episode.

All the puzzles were very short, w/ R1 (CHART-TOPPING HIT SONG) being the longest at only nineteen letters.

Justin Orscheln‘s first Final Spin attempt landed on BANKRUPT, and his second attempt hit LaT. As was the case on April 4, these spins were left intact. In the end, Tiffani Robinson won by $75.

During the closing chat on Thursday, Pat showed the proper pronunciation of Antigua on his cue card.

On Friday, Terresa Amidei pulled a Robert Santoli second Triple Tossup of STOP SIGN.

During the closing chat, Pat read a letter from a viewer who sent him a “frayed knot” (a worn-out rope tied in a knot), which was a pun on the term “afraid not”.

July 3-7: Great Escapes that aired October 3-7

@adamrocks05259 was at these tapings and he covered the middle three episodes.

The R4 puzzle on Monday, STRIKING IT RICH, had only one vowel and Vanna missed two of the I’s in said puzzle.

All of the puzzles on Friday were very short, w/ the $2K Tossup (AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE) being the longest at only nineteen letters.

July 10-14: America’s Game II that aired November 28-December 2

@jpgenius covered the first three episodes that week.

On Wednesday, Sonia Magwood-Morales filled in the entire R2 puzzle LOVE & EJECTION SEAT by herself.

On Thursday, Danielle Ozimek and Breauna Branch won all cardboard except the Gift Tag, claiming the $10K MW, Gift Tag, WC, and MDW in R3, as Danielle gets the $10K MW in R2, while Breauna gets the WC and MDW in R3.

Kyle Randle‘s name tag fell off after the Speed-Up Round, Danielle finishes second w/ $27,700, and we had NO PENALTY SPINS that episode.

Friday’s episode was pre-empted on FOX affiliates due to the Pac-12 Football Championship Game.

As for the game, we had our third TRIPLE STUMPER of the season on the first Triple Tossup of MEETING UP.

July 17-21: Wheel Across America that aired February 6-10

@jliu23232 recapped the middle three episodes.

On Monday, Cory Cannataro hopped on the EXPRESS w/ only one consonant left.

On Tuesday, we had this puzzle setup in the PP/Express Round…

C A T C H I N G S O M E / _ A _ E S

Krystal Gratta said B for BOMBOUT while on EXPRESS to throw away $7,700- did she seriously think the last word was BABES?! This is a G-Rated show! We got a $0 Prize Puzzle win as a result of that NSFW fail.

On Wednesday, we had a SEASON-WORST BANKRUPT TRASH of $30,200 including an unnecessary and PAINFUL BANKRUPT by Benny Varughese in Round 1, which deprived him $5,500 and the $13,900 Alaskan Cruise. To make matters worse, he BOMBED OUT on the EXPRESS thinking D was the last missing consonant in the word UNAVAILABLE. Unable to recover from the mishap, Jerry had no choice but to give this contestant the DESERVING label as a result. If that wasn’t bad enough, we had this in the BR…

_ L _ O S T E N O _ G H

The letters were more than ALMOST ENOUGH for this to be solvable, but Lindsey Choisnet STILL didn’t know the top word and let an easy $40K slip away.

There were too many penalty spins on Thursday, and Octavia Martin forwent calling the last consonant of D and solved the Speed-Up puzzle THE LIST IS ENDLESS.

On Friday, Natasha Jackson‘s attempt at solving the Bonus Puzzle WAY AHEAD OF THE CROWD was initially not accepted by Pat because she paused between the two words, but he was overruled by the board revealing the full answer.

July 24-28: Shopping Spree that aired January 9-13

Clips of Pat and Maggie shopping back in November 2007 were shown during the post-game chat on Monday.

The $1K Tossup on Tuesday, I AM NOT HERE TO WINDOW-SHOP, was improperly hyphenated.

On Wednesday, the R2 puzzle MONEY MONEY MONEY had only three unique consonants. No fewer than eight turns were lost in that round as the daily and weekly promos show called of three incorrect consonants (S, C, and D) that end up being edited out of the aired episode as part of at least one “null” cycle.

The Wheel of Fortune Memories clip on Friday (@SkippsLargo‘s last recap) was of Sarah Manchester becoming the show’s third millionaire.

July 31-August 4: Fun & Games that aired March 13-17

I recapped the first three episode of this week, which was sponsored by Live Play Bingo which included:

  • $10K in cash as the Prize.
  • $1K in cash as the Gift Tag.
  • The sponsor for the category Fun & Games.
  • $10K Giveaway to Lucky Wheel Watchers.

On Tuesday, John Wallace finished second w/ $20K.

On Wednesday, a cycle of three lost turns was edited out of R3 despite not being “null”. The cycle included a BANKRUPT from Carla Sartori, as she called an incorrect D while having $6,750, then started from $0 when the control returned to her, w/ Pat commenting that she “got some money back”. This affected the outcome, as she won the round and came in second w/ $24,399 cash & HI. This was the first known instance of an edited-out turn causing a discrepancy in the outcome. The rerun fixed the unaired BANKRUPT so that Carla‘s incorrect D on $500 was edited out instead.

Thursday’s episode was replaced w/ the conclusion of that awful America’s Game IV/Andy’s 5th anniversary week which took place on the second generic week.

On Friday, we FINALLY had a BR Menu which didn’t offer the dreaded categories of THING(S).

August 7-11: Fan Favorites that aired May 8-12

This week featured former contestants returning to play for the first time since Some of the Greats! in February of 1995 and the S27 title sequence was used. Also, throughout the entire week, Sheldon the ceramic Dalmatian appeared in various places on the set and the PP trip was a trip to the South Pacific.

Monday featured Blair Davis, Christian Dixie, and Caitlin Burke. Christian solved the first Tossup WELCOME BACK! w/ only the second E showing and the $2K Tossup of VIVA LAS VEGAS is categorized as Song Lyrics, going against the precedent of using Title if a title or work exists in more than one medium.

Although most of the game was about average, it ended w/ him winning the Infiniti Q50 thanks to RSTLNEing his BR of PAY THEM A VISIT. Oh, and according to Christian, contestant positions were predetermined at least for this taping, rather than the contestants drawing randomly for them.

Tuesday featured John Salvetti, Melinda Gardner, and Emil DeLeon. John solved the second Triple Tossup DOWNHILL SKIING w/ only the second L showing.

Wednesday featured Jessie Rebhan, Dr. Reka Barton, and Kellen Franklin. We had a very rare instance of THREE PRs in a single game. And Dr. Reka had much better luck in this episode than in her last appearance largely thanks to her $22,500 EXPRESS run, even though she only spun twice in the entire game.

Thursday featured Julia Fry, Fred Fletcher-Jackson, and Ricky Gilbert, all of whom swept the maingame in their original appearances. All three contestants had a nice five-figure match, but there wouldn’t be TIME FOR AN UPGRADE to Fred’s total to the tune of $45K.

Friday featured Tanino Privitra, Justin Orschein, and Diana Hawkins. And because @andynwof was out of town to visit San Antonio, I had to step in for him. This end-of-week episode had a rare instance of a Crossword Round containing only three words, but the maingame wasn’t that great aside from the tight match between the men and Justin‘s Triple Tossup sweep. And since Tanino won because of the PP, that proved to be bad news for the BR when he got a FORCED LOSS BR puzzle.

August 14-17: Margaritaville Resorts Family Vacation that aired April 24-27

@jpgenius covered the first three episodes and this was the only week to have no BR car landings (excluding weeks where no car was on offer). Jim also introduced Pat and Vanna from his podium on set.

On Monday, Pat and Vanna played pickleball in the postgame chat.

On Tuesday, Angela Dao PAINFULLY LOST $21,350 including the $10K MW to the MDW‘s left side. Darin Prince was credited w/ a correct answer to the third Triple Tossup w/o ringing in after the other two contestants previously rang in; while the Tossup solve cue played, the puzzle continued to reveal as though it was unsolved.

On Wednesday, we had our fifth TRIPLE STUMPER on the second Triple Tossup since we had this season’s second aired instance of no one ringing in, tying S24’s record. This was also the second aired instance of this happening. Jim and Pat traded places in the BR since Sarah Ward was a fan of Jim.

On Thursday, we had a rare instance of a contestant getting buzzed out for taking too long; in this case, Keesha Pollard took too long to choose a letter after spinning $500.

August 18: America’s Game V, Great American Cities that aired June 7

@jliu23232 covered this episode, and it features a Wheel of Fortune Memories clip of a series of incorrect Tossup answers from May 2, 2022.

August 21-25: Grand Getaways that aired May 22-26

Teams of grandparents and grandchildren played during this week, which meant the usual age requirement of 18 was relaxed due to some of the grandchildren being as young as middle schoolers. As a result, no cars were available in the BR.

On Monday, Riley Richmond & Linda Philipp solved the second Triple Tossup of NEW YORK w/ only the K showing and The Wheel of Fortune Memories clip was contestant Tiffany Robinson giving an answer of “BOURBON AND GIN” to the Speed-Up puzzle BARBIE AND KEN from 10/3/2018.

On Tuesday, suggesting that R1-3 ran overtime, the R4 puzzle of SLAYING IT! was shorter than ten letters.

On Wednesday, none of SAME NAME, BEFORE & AFTER, SAME LETTER, or CROSSWORD are used. However, this episode was mainly infamous for breaking the record for MOST TRIPLE STUMPERS IN ONE SEASON at six.

August 28-September 1: Wheel Around The World that aired March 6-10

As was normal for this theme, clips of an international version were shown during the closing chat: Spain on Monday, Hungary on Tuesday, Denmark on Wednesday, Romania on Thursday, and Greece on Friday.

On Monday, the first Triple Tossup of PLAYING GAMES (FUN & GAMES) was rare instance of the category also containing part of the answer.

On Tuesday, Pat pulled Greg Weichert‘s beard during the interviews and his name tag fell off as he took his first spin in R2 but quickly retrieves it.

On Wednesday, Bradley Rose solved the Speed-Up puzzle AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER w/ only the T’s and R’s showing.

August 31: Day 3 of America’s Game III (Winter Hideaway) that aired February 1 recapped by me

The “Wheel of Fortune Memories” clip is Brandon Straka giving wrong answers to the BR puzzle WAVING GOODBYE and then waving goodbye from 2013.

September 4-8: Wheel Of Fortune XL IV that aired May 1-5 (Sept. 7 is replaced with the Jan. 24 episode from the second unthemed week)

@jliu23232 covered the first three episodes by the request of Friendship Feed.

On Monday, Mike Bell won $58,298 before the BR. He also exceeded $100K w/o hitting that amount in the BR, which he solved for $45K and a total of $103,298.

Tuesday had NO PENALTY SPACE HITS and the Wheel of Fortune Memories clip was LaToya Williams’ $100K win from 5/25/2016.

On Wednesday, Jeremy Manos solved the second Triple Tossup of HIGH JUMP w/ only the P showing and none of SAME NAME, BEFORE & AFTER, SAME LETTER, or CROSSWORD were used.

On Friday, Kayla Vandre solved the second Triple Tossup BEST FRIENDS w/ only the S showing and Dwana Olsen finished second w/ $22,700. Kayla also exceeds $100K w/o hitting that amount in the BR, which she solved for $40K and another $40K from the XL Wedge for a total of $104,600.

And that’s the end of the S40 Summer Rerun Schedule.
