Kevin Durant recently went into detail about why he chose a red velvet cupcake look for his newest Nikes.

The Warriors star shared his motivation for including a style that throws shade at Thunder fans who razzed Durant with cupcake jokes aplenty after he left for Golden State.

“My favorite memory of red velvet was being called a cupcake every time I touched the ball in Oklahoma City — that was fun,” Durant said in a BuzzFeed video on Instagram. “That’s why it was so funny to us after we won the basketball game. It was kind of a little jab to the fans in Oklahoma City, but it’s all fun and games.”

The video featured KD making and then eating red velvet cupcakes, clearly a reference to an edition of his KDX signature shoes that look like that dessert.

(For those living under a rock: Russell Westbrook posted a picture of cupcakes the day KD announced his move to Golden State, seemingly saying the switch was soft, and OKC fans latched on with enthusiasm.)

Durant further explained his new cupcake-colored kicks as the video continued.

“But to have the support from your teammates, especially when you’re going through a new experience like that, it was really refreshing to see them support me, and it definitely showed that fans get really creative, and they’re really invested in their team and the sport of basketball, so I look at that as a positive,” Durant said.

“It was just a lot of speculation about who I was and why I decided to leave where I was for nine years to go to another team. Everything was in question: my character, why I decided to make this decision, who made me make this decision. I just wanted to show everybody that it came from me, and I’m still the same person I was before I made the decision.

“Me being with Nike, everything was coming together at that time, and for us to do Still KD, have the KD 10 out and win a championship, it was just perfect.”
