I could not stop thinking about Tufts ever since I first stepped onto the campus my junior year in high school. All around me were passionate students who were stretching themselves by pursuing diverse passions such as trying Taekwondo and learning how to play an African instrument. After participating in the Voices program my senior year, I became even more certain that I would like to study and live in this community where people are intrinsically motivated to challenge themselves and appreciate uniqueness. I have visited many colleges before, but I had never been to a college campus with so much diversity and sense of family. As soon as I got home, I decided to go Early Decision to Tufts University.

I knew Tufts was the perfect school for me before I went on the Voices program. A couple of months before Voices, I had visited Tufts with my parents. Before even arriving on the campus, I’d had a gut feeling that Tufts might be “the school.” During the information session, the admissions officer, when describing a Jumbo, seemed to be describing me. He painted Tufts as a school that I knew could be my home with words such as: diverse, intellectual, “cool to be smart”, and LGBT friendly. Throughout the talk, I shared countless knowing smiles with my parents. Afterwards, when I was ranking the schools that I’d visited on a scale of one to five across twenty three categories, I had to start awarding Tufts scores of six.

The moment I knew Tufts was for me was actually months after I accepted the offer to come to Tufts. It was during my BEST Summer Session and I had the ability to take classes and have that college experience early. After this experience is when I knew Tufts was for me because I finally felt like a Jumbo, and not just someone that was going to Tufts.

Tufts combined a number of important criteria that I prioritized in my college search. With 5500 undergrads, it is small enough to have an intimate and engaging learning experience, while not being so small that it feels like I know everyone (although, I wish I did). Another key factor is the proximity to a big city. I was very fortunate to work at an investment bank in Boston during the school year. This provided me with practical work experience to supplement my theoretical knowledge from the classroom.
Outside of the classroom, I have enjoyed being part of the Varsity Hockey Team and Tufts Alpha Fund. The Tufts Alpha Fund is a group of ten students selected to manage a portion of the school’s endowment. One of my favorite aspects of being part of these two groups is the opportunity to work with some of my best friends in a competitive team environment. The friendly and supportive student body and faculty have made Tufts experience extremely fulfilling.
