Why Won’t My Remote Change Channels But Volume Works

Having been a customer of Cox’s bundled Internet + TV package for over a year now, I can say that the Contour Box is one of the best television and streaming devices available on the market.

It does, however, as with all electronic devices, come with its share of problems.

One of the main issues I have been facing off-late with my Contour is that I can’t seem to change the channels from the remote no matter what I do, but the volume changes without an issue.

If your Cox remote does not change channels but the volume buttons still work, it could be the batteries are low on power, or the remote requires to be reconfigured with your Contour.

If this didn’t work for you, then I’ll be highlighting some other workarounds, like adding zero before the channel number, resetting your cable box and contacting Support.

Add zero Before the Channel Number

A simple fix that does leave people facepalming at the end is just to add a ‘0’ before the channel numbers.

This is because the TV’s logic board tends to read ‘0’ instead of ignoring it, so it knows to distinguish channel numbers with only 2 digits.

If this worked for you, then maybe just do a reset for your remote to make sure everything continues to work as it should. I will highlight how to reset your remote later on.

Check your Cox Cable Box

Sometimes there might be some interference caused by other devices or issues with the firmware on your cable box.

You can rectify this by resetting your cable box, which will reinstall any firmware and sort out any other issues you might be facing.

This should solve most issues between your Contour remote and cable box.

You can also check other devices you own to ensure they aren’t transmitting data over the same frequency as your Contour cable box.

Check the batteries in your Cox Remote

Batteries are always a major cause of small problems. We put them into our devices and forget how long they’ve been there.

You can do a couple of checks to ensure your batteries are working and provide enough juice to your remote.

Open up the battery panel on your device, and make sure your batteries are seated in the correct orientation and they are slotted in properly.

If you think the batteries are low on power, you can check this in two ways.

Drop Test

You can check if your battery has power in it by taking the batteries out of the device and holding it a little above a flat surface.

Now drop the batteries, and if they bounce back, it means they are out of power.

Full batteries will be heavier and far denser, preventing them from bouncing.

Using a Voltmeter

If you own a voltmeter, then you can get a more accurate reading of your battery levels.

Before starting, make sure the voltmeter level is on the DC setting and measure in volts rather than amps or ohms.

Make sure to connect the positive and negative leads to the appropriate terminals on the battery. You can find ‘+’ and ‘-‘ markings on most commercial batteries to help with this.

Connecting the leads to opposite terminals won’t damage the battery, but your reading will basically show up in negative.

Reset your Cox Remote

There are various reasons why you might want to reset your Contour remote.

One of the most frequent issues you might face apart from the buttons not working as they should is that the device sometimes stops working in RF mode (Radio Frequency) and switches to IR mode (Infrared).

You can understand how your remote functions by looking at the pattern of lights on the remote’s LED indicator.

  • Green, Green – This means a command was sent and confirmed by the remote in RF mode. Your device is working as it should
  • Green, Red – This means the remote sent a command, but the receiver did not confirm the action.
  • Red – This means all commands from the remote are being sent in IR mode. The remote will continue to function, but usability may not be as flexible, and certain functions may not work as intended.

You can unpair and re-pair the remote at any time if you are facing latency issues.

Now to perform a factory reset,

  • Unpair and re-pair your Contour remote.
  • Hold down the Setup button on the remote for 3 seconds.
  • The red LED light on the remote will turn green.
  • Using the number pad, enter 9-8-1.

The LED should blink twice in green. You have now successfully reset your Contour remote.

You will now need to reprogram the remote with any devices you want to use, as all the data has been erased.

Reset your Cox Cable Box

You can Reset your Cox cable box by following these steps:

  • Switching off the device and removing the power cord.
  • Let the power drain from the device completely by waiting for 30 – 45 seconds.
  • Connect the power to your cable box and turn on power.
  • The device should take around 3 – 5 minutes to reconfigure itself.

You can also try resetting your cable box using Cox’s Cable Connection Reset Tool. It transmits a signal to refresh and reboot all your TV receivers in your home.

Please note that using the tool for a reset might take up to 15 minutes, and any programmes that are being recorded will be interrupted.

Contact Support

If you have tried all the methods mentioned above and you are still facing issues with your remote, then you can get in touch with Cox Customer Support to help you out with either a repair or replacement under warranty.

Replace your Cox Remote

You can get a replacement for your Contour remote on Amazon or directly from Cox, but before making a purchase, make sure to check the model of the Contour remote with the model of the Contour cable box that you currently own.

Final Thoughts on Cox Remote not changing channels while volume works

If your Contour remote won’t change channels or has any other issues of a similar magnitude, you can use any one of these fixes, and everything should be fine.

If not, then a replacement remote isn’t too hard to come by.

You can also use the methods to reset your cable box if,

  • Your Contour receivers are not linking to each other properly
  • Your Contour or Minibox has frozen, or the installation guide isn’t loading correctly.
  • Your Minibox displays “Activation Taking Too Long’.

You can also use Cox’s user manual and guides to help you understand more about your Contour remote.

If you’re tired of facing these issues and just want to see what else is out there, remember to cancel your Cox Internet.
