I’ve lost count of the number of people I’ve known who had been friends with a guy for years, and never knew they had a partner.
Like, they literally never mentioned they had a long-term girlfriend or wife.

So it does bring up the question, why would a guy never mention his girlfriend?
Well, from my experience and from researching this topic deeper, here are 10 of the most common reasons guys hide the fact they have a girlfriend:

1. He Wants You to Think He’s Single
Let’s start with the most obvious explanation, a lot of guys will not mention they have a girlfriend so you think they’re single.
He might not even be interested in you, but he knows that by pretending to be single, he has a shot with you or some of your friends.
It’s just how some guys operate.
For some, it’s deliberate as they will take any chance to flirt and cheat, and for others, they just prefer to be seen as single.

2. He Doesn’t Consider His Relationship Serious
If a guy is in a new relationship or it’s not very serious, he might not bother mentioning it to anyone.
He might only introduce his girlfriend to his close friends and family and keep everyone else in the dark.
There could be a number of reasons for this including; he doesn’t want people to know he’s in a relationship in case it ends, he’s not sure about the relationship, or he doesn’t want to get in any deeper.
Whatever the reason, if he’s not serious about his girlfriend, he’s likely to keep it on the down-low.
3. He Doesn’t Respect His Girlfriend
If a guy doesn’t respect his girlfriend, he’s probably not going to want to shout it from the rooftops.
In fact, he might go out of his way to keep her hidden away from everyone because he just doesn’t value or respect her.
This could be anything from him cheating on her, to him flirting with other girls in front of her, to him talking about her behind her back.

Whatever the case may be, if he doesn’t respect his girlfriend, he’s not going to want anyone to know about her.
4. He’s a Player
This is another one of the common reasons why guys pretend to be single, they want to be a player and cheat on their girlfriends.
Obviously, they know that if they mention they have a girlfriend, it’s going to put a stop to their player ways.
So instead, they’ll just act like they’re single and available when really, they’re not.
If you suspect a guy is doing this, the best thing you can do is steer well clear of him and find someone who is actually mature and honest enough to treat other women with respect.
5. He’s Embarrassed by His Girlfriend
In some cases, a guy might be embarrassed by his girlfriend for any number of reasons.
She could be overweight, she could be from a lower social class than him, or she might just have some personality traits that he finds embarrassing.
Whatever the case may be, if he’s embarrassed by his girlfriend, he’s not going to want anyone to know about her.
He’ll keep her hidden away and might even lie about her if he has to.
On a more serious note; this is not a healthy or respectful relationship and if you’re in this situation, you need to get out!
6. He’s Generally Being Sneaky
Some guys are just generally sneaky people and they’ll do whatever they can to get away with stuff and enjoy being a little ‘mysterious’.
So if he’s hiding his girlfriend from you, it could be because he’s just a naturally shady person.
It doesn’t necessarily mean he’s up to no good, but it does mean you need to be careful around him as he’s probably never going to be entirely honest with you.
7. He Thinks He’s Going to Leave Her
In some cases, a guy might not mention his girlfriend because he’s already planning on leaving her.
He’s just waiting for the right opportunity and in the meantime, he doesn’t want anyone to know about her.
This could be because he wants to move on quickly and keep his options open, or he doesn’t want to talk about his current situation so it’s easier to just ignore it.

8. He’s a Super Private Person
Some guys are just really private people and they don’t like to share much about their personal life with anyone.
So if he’s never mentioned his girlfriend, it could just be because he prefers to keep things to himself.
This doesn’t necessarily mean there’s anything wrong, but it does make him a bit more difficult to get to know.
If you become really close, he should open up and let you in more. Just don’t be surprised when you find out he’s ‘hiding’ other things you’d expect to have known.

There could be any number of reasons for this; maybe he wants you to think he’s not available so you’ll be more interested in him, or maybe he just likes playing games.
Whatever the case may be, it’s best to just steer clear of anyone who seems like they might be playing games with you.
Unless you meet a guy’s girlfriend in person, if you think he’s playing games and something doesn’t feel right, go with your gut instinct.
