You are viewing: Why You Should Not Meditate At Night
It’s no wonder why meditation has become such a widespread practice among busy professionals.
However, most people don’t realize that meditating at midnight isn’t recommended.
Here are seven reasons why you shouldn’t meditate at midnight.
- Your body clock is not designed to function properly at night
Your circadian rhythm (the 24-hour cycle of sleep/wake cycles) is regulated by two different systems: the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), located in the hypothalamus, and the pineal gland. These two structures work together to regulate our internal clocks. When we go to bed at night, these two brain parts synchronize their activity. However, if you try to meditate at midnight, your SCN may become confused and think it’s time to wake up. As a result, you’ll have trouble falling asleep again until morning.
- You might fall asleep

If you’ve ever tried to meditate while lying down, you know how hard it is to stay awake. If you’re trying to meditate at midnight when you should be sleeping, you could end up nodding off instead.
Meditation is supposed to relax and allow you to enter a state of deep relaxation. However, if you meditate too late at night, it may cause you to fall asleep.
- You might neither sleep nor meditate
It’s natural to want to stop thinking about everything else once you start meditating. But if you let yourself drift off, you risk losing track of where you are going. Instead of focusing on your Kundalini, you could find yourself lost in thought.
You probably sat down to meditate to clear your head and calm your nerves. But if you meditate when it is time to sleep, you might forget why you started.
- Your brain is not designed to function correctly after midnight
Your body temperature drops significantly after midnight, making it harder for your mind to stay focused. If you meditate late at night, you may drift off to sleep much more quickly than if you were to meditate later in the evening.
- You’ll wake up feeling groggy
When you meditate late at night, you won’t feel refreshed upon waking. Instead, you’ll likely experience feelings of fatigue and exhaustion.

You’ve probably heard about how important it is to get good rest each day. But did you know that getting adequate sleep is just as important? Sleep deprivation makes us less productive and increases our risk of depression.
It’s hard to sit still and meditate when you’re tired. So if you want to meditate, try to go to bed earlier. Or, if you need to meditate, set aside a specific time for it.
The best times to meditate are early morning hours and evenings.
I prefer to meditate during sunrise and sunset.
